baldylox Posted February 2, 2019 I was never into actually playing D&D but I certainly liked all the cool monsters they came up with for the games. As a kid, I found a game shop in our only mall that sold the tiny pewter figures and was kinda enthralled with them. They had some at the store that were custom painted for sale but those were VERY expensive so I could never afford to buy them. My mom was pretty artistic and told me if I bought the figures I wanted, she would buy the paints and help me out by giving me pointers. So I saved up and bought a few of them every month and painted them myself with Mom helping me when I had questions. Of course, I was like 12 to 14 years old during this time so I had ZERO painting skills and didn't know anything about shading, shadowing or stuff like that. I had a very basic set of paints and just worked with those. But I was pretty proud of how they turned out and displayed them happily at home. After I moved out on my own, they got packed up and I lost them. They disappeared for years until I got my own house back in 2001. After putting them out on display for a year or so, I had to put them away again due to some remodeling and such. And wouldn't you know it? I lost them again! I had no clue where I had put them and it took me years to find them again. While digging around in my garage late last year, I opened up a random box and there in the bottom were my figures! I took them out, cleaned them off and now have them displayed on a shelf in the doll room. So here they are in all their terrible painted glory! I forget half the names of these things so please bear with me and fill in the blanks if you know what they really are. First up is a Wyvern. This is a Jabberwocky. Why are his wings rainbow colored? I have NO CLUE. XD DSC_1927 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr DSC_1928 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr DSC_1929 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr And these little creeps are my second faves. I'm pretty sure are called troglodytes. DSC_1930 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr DSC_1931 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr Last but not least are the two snake men. They are SUCH a pain to make stand up. DSC_1932 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr DSC_1933 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr DSC_1934 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr That's all! Like I said, I'm not good at painting but they aren't terrible. If you guys and gals have anything like these please feel free to share them! Actually, anything D&D related would be cool to see so share with us here! Billy I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.
Gabriel Posted February 2, 2019 I don't have anything like that stuff. I think your painted figures are done well. About all they might need is an ink wash to make contours pop. Regardless of that, you went all out and gave detail. With the Jabberwocky, I see the red lining of its mouth behind it's white teeth. You even painted it's nostrils and gave the wing bones a diffferent color from the wing surface. The Minotaur and his belt buckles also jump out at me. There's obvious attention to detail on display. The rainbow griffon is kewl! The figures I've painted are nowhere near as nice. I have some old one I did 30 years ago, and which are near and dear to me, but they're showing their age with their paint chipping off from years of less than perfect care. I have some Warhammer 40K Genestealers and some Battletech Mechs I've done recently (within the past three years or so), but they're none too good of paint jobs. sinclair Posted February 2, 2019 You sure did a better job then I could even do now.
Poofiemus Posted February 3, 2019 I need to pick up a unicorn figure and mod it; my DM was chill enough to let me roll a unicorn paladin as my character. He has so much charisma he once walked into a tavern, shouted "I'm a horse with a birth defect!" at the top of his lungs, and everyone believed him. Including his future party members. Seriously, I need to immortalize Zephanine somehow because he's my second character in this campaign; my rolls are crap. In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser. SakuraSylph Posted February 5, 2019 Oh hey, D&D. I learned 3.5E once in order to try to get into playing, but eventually sold it all because I couldn't make the DM/party dynamic work well enough with only 2 people at the table. Most scenario stuff isn't designed for a solo PC. The best thing about the experience was that learning the game system inside and out enabled me to build an absolute beast of a character in Neverwinter Nights when I later went to play it. Being able to play that and its expansions co-op on two computers was the kind of D&D we were looking for but couldn't get out of the tabletop edition, since then the DM role was automated and everyone got to play. In the mid-2000s WotC released a line of pre-painted plastic minis for D&D; I still have the Bulette (the "diggy thing" from Baldur's Gate II that was always nipping at your rear end as you ran). Not sure if these are a thing anymore, but might be if you were looking to add any other fantasy creatures to your figure collection. SakuraSylph
