A not so simple pine storage box (Part 4: tweaking and padding)

New project time, and this time it does not involve chairs ...

No work descriptions this time, due to... reasons, and also might be hesitant to answer any technical questions.

but the photo's should probably be explanatory enough.

Part 4: Tweaking and padding:

Now this little box of mine took a bit of a motivational blow when I happened to spot another similar thing being used in the wild, and thus set this aside to await better days. Unfortunately when I did get back to it, there had developed a bit of an issue with the lid piece, namely it had curled up a bit more after a few months more of letting it sit.

As a bit of a pre-emptive thought I had not glued the hinges into place yet, and if I had, I would have been in a situation where I probably had to have made a new lid for this thing.

But as it was, I got away with a rather hefty ammount of sanding to get the lid to be flush again with the base box. the slots for the hinges had to be tweaked on both sides of the equasion to even out the difference of the now significantly narrower lid, and I think I had to take out about 1.5 mm of material at the most offending spot.

naturally this had to be even with the box, and I was quite sick and tired of the fettling before I had gotten it to a acceptable near 0.5mm gap between the two pieces. The lid slots for the hinges were reworked since a lot of material had dissapeared from their surroundings, and the hinges themselves were now epoxied onto the base, since anything else wouldnt have held structurally.

now that the lid was back where it should be, I was where I was when we last left off, namely starting to add the padding.

This also took some time to figure out a suitable solution to this problem, and finally I came to the conclusion, that it only needed to look comfy, not necessarily be comfy. So I took some of the insulation foam I've had laying around for some time, and sliced it up in a suitable manner to make the side bolsters for both the lid and base.

Unfortunately the stiffener piece I had glued onto the lid to keep it from curling was now in the way and had to be given some belt-sander treatment to make things work.:

(In the picture you can also see where I had to sand down the lid, and getting the gaps even really was a bit of a pain in the butt.)

The gaps are not perfect, but they dont need to be, since after some rounding of the edges, they will be covered in satin, or something of the sorts, so there has to be some gaps for that to fit into in the seams.

but minor progress at least...

To Be Continued....

I'm hoping you're not planning on planting her. 😟

The difference between Dollfie Dreams and Heroin? Heroin is illegal, Dollfie Dreams probably should be.

“Empty wallets, full hearts.” That’s probably an apt description for the effects of DD addiction

Does this mean one of your girls is getting renamed Morticia?

Might sound a bit skittish now, but Id prefer Wednesday to be honest... if we are talking about the Tim Burton Barry Sonnenfeld versions. (then again I was a teenager back when those were first released, so... oh that homicidal grin at the summer camp)

But.. not really technically vampire inspired, even though the doll I originally dreamed this up for sucks of energy from a host to do battle, and then sleep in a box to recover...

There's also another for which this DD sized one is perhaps a tad too big, but overall the weight is on par for the prop that involved a girl with silver hair, purple eye's and thicc eyebrows.

but all in all something I've been thinking of making for ten years now, but seem to finally have the toolkit for it.

Fantastic craftsmanship, and also the doll in the box gave me a good laugh. Keep up the good work friend.

Now we just need an MDD sized coffin and a certain White haired girl hulking it around with an Anti-Materiel Mana rifle inside.

The trouble with a princess coffin is that its actually her size, so it would need to be a DDS... but I probably wont do another, because motivations being shot down.

Also this ended up a tad too heavy to be used as a prop in that manner.

Thank you very many, and the trabant vibe shouldnt be too surprising, since this is actually modeled after the later Namaniku ATK illustration of her carrying the coffin, which also was adapted for the anime version.

the earlier one is just a regular vertical sided coffin, so dunno might that be doable again, but its not really as nice looking.
