Dark of the Moon Soundwave.

49523570477_eacd424e5b_c.jpg

I don't even like these movies, why do I keep buying Studio Series?  Well, the non-Bumblebee movie ones, at least.

Silver car with Laserbeak on top mode.  Laserbeak cannot store inside of him.

49523352991_397e88b9fe_c.jpg

This is how Soundwave drives around without a driver.  Actually, the panel with the head just would not flip over at first.

49523352956_a8d23f1bce_c.jpg

With Studio Series Jazz, one of Hasbro's best releases.  I'm not sure the alt modes are to scale.  Anyway, if you want to know more about Jazz, let me know.

That upscaled Classics Starscream from Earthrise.  Not bad from the top.

Expected robo-kibble bottom.

49527134278_1db21db8a9_c.jpg

As much as this feels like an upscale of the Classics Seeker, it's still awesome.  I have the Siege Starscream, which is nice, but this toy is the definitive CHUG (Classics, Henkei, Universe, Generations) Starscream.

49527134203_db16cd02ac_c.jpg

From the back.  One day, someone will figure out how to hide the nosecone.  Until that day, I'd love to get Thundercracker, Skywarp, Dirge, Ramjet and Thrust from this mold.

49527937117_2558a1d4b9_c.jpg

Looks good with Soundwave.

49527134188_472d0875e9_c.jpg

I noticed this on the box.  I hope this is a hint of a new figure.

Starscream looks good.  Thanks for that undercarriage shot.  That's the kind of thing the YouTube reviewers constantly try to hide.  It's about what's expected in this case.  Jet looks good. Robot looks good.

Yeah, the undercarriage is what I expected, and looks mostly like the Classics version, too.  I'll have to dig out one of my Classics Seekers, I have all of the major releases.  Actually, I should be able to get a G2 Ramjet easily.  I don't mind the similarities at all, it was good in 2006, and it's good now.

The 3rd party add-on kit adds an additional 5mm port behind the arm, perfect for using the extra gun as a flight stand.  I'm pretty sure this is the Matrix Workshop kit.  I bought it on eBay.

I actually acquired this back in December but I didn't actually transform him until right before I took these pictures about an hour before this post.

20200213_225718.jpg.2cd777a73db8c62f8851f0b0bb50a082.jpg

Pros:

  • Unlike with Coolsville/Jazzy, I can transform Downbeat from car to robot and back without chipping paint, without breaking something, and not suffer from an aneurysm.
  • Both modes look fantastic.
  • Includes three facial expressions and are easy to swap them in and out.

(Decepti)Cons:

  • In robot mode, the various parts which tab into each other don't have solid connections. The tabs will dislodge.
  • Price. This set me back almost twice as much as Coolsville/Jazzy, negating the lack of an aneurysm while transforming him.

I still have a lot of stickers left over from Coolsville/Jazzy, so I may decide to paste them on Downbeat.

My only major complaint is the lack of solid connections of tab-in parts in robot mode. (The connections are solid in car mode.) While I complain about the price, I would complain about it less if the parts tabbed into each other with solid connections.

Despite my complaint, I'm still happy I was able to find this inside the pile of TF toys in a Mandarake store. After my eBay debacles, I had given up on trying to buy this version of Jazz. I considered the fact I was able to find Downbeat in a physical retail store to be a minor miracle.

@growcian Downbeat is nice!  Certainly the best of the 3rd party Jazz toys.  Never did get the original, but I have the Targetmaster Stepper repaint, Bounceback.  I may have ordered the G2 Maestro, too.  I gave my Zeta Jazzy away as a gift.  For some reason, Silverwing is still friends with me after that.  Anyway, glad you were able to score a Downbeat.

TF news + images I'm excited over:

https://www.seibertron.com/transformers/news/transformers-earthrise-deluxe-arcee-fasttrack-commander-sky-lynx-titan-scorponok-revealed/44524/

I'm specifically excited over Commander Class Sky Lynx. I may be in the market for Titan Scorponok as well.

I'm also excited over Flame Toys Windblade:

Skylynx looks pretty cool, I'm glad I skipped the Combiner Wars version.

Scorponok is awesome.  With Apeface out, and Snapdragon said to be on the way, that just leaves the Headmaster Jrs. to finish the set.  I kitbashed Nightbeat, Siren, GoShooter and Minerva, with a POTP Inferno on the way for the Renderform Hosehead/Cab add-on kit I ordered.

The Earthrise Arcee looks better than the recently announced MP-51 Arcee.  I think I'll just stick with Ocular Max Azalea for my MP Arcee.

Pretty cool figure, although the legs are a bit loose, and some of the parts seem to be fragile.

I agree.  I have a history of dislike for SkyLynx.  It comes from the original G1 toy having that cheap plasticy look all the post movie toys had.  I guess the way to explain it is that the pre-movie toys tended to seem like replicas (for the time) while the post-movie toys seemed very much like toys.  Plus, I didn't see many of the episodes of the post-movie cartoon back then, but when I did they had SkyLynx and he was such a doofus and they were pushing him to sell his toy so damn hard.  It caused me to dislike the character as well as the toy.

And the thing is, I would ordinarly really like SkyLynx.  He's a Lion/Lynx thing and a space shuttle!  Cats and spacecraft in one!  That should have been an immediate favorite for me.

I think the render looks really good.  I'm probably going to pre-order and end my decades of Sky Lynx hate.

You guys seen Nicee?

https://www.bigbadtoystore.com/Product/VariationDetails/117563

Some of the TF boards banned this figure, due more to poster comments than anything else. Definitely in a similar style to Flame Toys Windblade.

@Gabriel, yes, there was a significant change in 1986, when Hasbro dropped diecast parts, rubber tires, chrome and transparent windshields.  I had an Ultra Magnus with plastic wheels, and fewer pant apps compared to the initial release.  I know Hot Rod and Kup had similar cost-cutting variants.  The change in build and material lines up with the transition from reused Diaclone (and other) toys and the creation of all new toys.

I pondered buying Nicee (and even had a pre-order at one time) but ultimately decided against it. I was never a fan of Arcee. (While I don't dislike her, I also don't like her enough to buy toys of her.) Nicee being a spicy fembot version of Arcee is awesome. However, that wasn't enough for me to swallow the $125+ price tag. A local friend will buy her from an overseas seller at $85. That's a lot more palatable but I already whined too often in this thread about why I won't copy my local friend.

I speculate Nicee is the reason Takara Tomy is producing Earthrise and Masterpiece Arcee. Nicee is basically taking the attention Takara Tomy wants for Arcee, so TT needed to do *something*. She's not being made into a spicy fembot but...

This didn't bother me but then again, I didn't buy a lot of TF toys post movie so I didn't notice.

I liked his toy enough to make a purchase at the time. I needed the money years later so I ended up selling the toy. I don't regret selling the toy because I didn't care for the motorized walking feature. That feature made the lynx portion's legs tuck in an awkward position in shuttle mode. Cat + spacecraft combo was awesome but I didn't like the toy enough to keep when I needed the money and wanted to sell something.

As for the cartoons, his character came across as a loud mouthed jerk. He came across as trying way too hard to hide his insecurities by bragging about how awesome he is every time he opened his mouth. His grating personality made me wonder if he would have been a more interesting character had he been a Decepticon. I definitely didn't like his character. However, with the toy, cat + spacecraft = awesome.

I'm still in the market for buying better versions of G1 character toys I have and used to have. I decided against buying the MMC version when that was still available. I couldn't see myself buying the MMC version. However, I can see myself buying the Earthrise version.

As for Scorponok, I have no history with the toy other than remembering I couldn't afford to buy it back in the day.

If ever I have wanted a Transformers toy, it's the second I saw that Nicee.  Holy Jebus, she looks amazing!  I've never seen anything like that and it's just so cool.  Like a robotic DD toy!  😄  I see the pre-order is over tho so I'm guessing she won't be easy to find.

I have Rouge from Fantoys and I've preordered long ago Nicee... any news on her release date?

I love restyle in general, and this is a restyle I really appreciate.

Ditto for Flame Toys Wingblade, she's so beautyful that I can pass over the fact that she doesn't transform (Like everything Flame Toys/Sentinel does...)(for that I'll wait the Wingblade from Big Fire Bird), but I'm still debating if I can pass over the fact that she's a kit... I don't do kit.

@baldylox check eBay, there are likely still preorders open.  I recommend Bababobo00712.  Most of my 3rd party figures come from that seller.

@Testament the release date has been pushed back after the coronavirus outbreak.  April-June right now.

I skipped FT Rouge, as I hate their transformations.  The reviews made it seem the Rouge was especially bad, one YouTube reviewer I watch couldn't get his to transform at all.

Well, I've transformed her a couple of time for review purpose, after the first time it's easier, but...

I'll not transform her again, probably.

She's awesome in both robot and vehicle mode, but there are many metal parts painted and every time you move something into something else the paint chip off a little.

Also the back packs are like and origami. Wonderful for how they collapse, but you must fisically bend some pieces to let them slide into shape. I don't know for how long they can endure such transformation.

Anyway if I could go back in time, I'll bought her again. It's my only Fantoys so far, so I can't compare her to other product of the brand.

There are many not-Arcee out there, but I hate when you must detatch parts for transformation, and many other are ugly in car mode. The FT was the only one that hit the spot until now.

I've seen the Masterpiece photos, but... I'm not happy with the results. Good car mode, but I don't like the robot mode at the moment. Maybe they've mistransformed her, cause her breasts are too low. I'll wait for some official photos. But considering the price/quality policy of Takara, they'll never see my money again.

I will now do a not so Nicee thing by derailing the conversation about her upcoming release. 😅

While I don't care too much about Micromasters and Battlemasters, there's info and images concerning the upcoming releases of Earthrise Smokescreen and Megatron as well:

https://www.seibertron.com/transformers/news/generations-earthrise-airwave-megatron-smokescreen-and-more-revealed-ahead-of-toy-fair-2020/44529/

Unlike the version of Smokescreen based on the Siege Prowl mold, I'm very interested in buying the Earthrise version of him. The render images look great.

As for Earthrise Megatron, I have mixed feelings. I don't like the head sculpt of the Siege Megatron so I hoped he would get a better release in the Earthrise line. Now that preliminary images are available, I'm not sure if the Earthrise version is "better". I'm not too wild about his Earthrise head sculpt and his 'bot mode looks kibble-tastic. I'll need to wait and see for the actual product and not base my conclusion on the render images. I think his tank mode is fine; I don't love it but I don't have anything to complain about (*GASP*) either.

I will now derail my own babble about the upcoming Earthrise Smokescreen and Megatron with photos of what I received in the mail today.

20200221_212543.jpg.cb8ecdb102796a6f7b90f783d30ebd9c.jpg

As usual with recent releases of toys in the Siege and Earthrise lines, he's packed in there like Gulliver.

20200221_214844.jpg.5d849faf1df51587ab73337c7ed6abf1.jpg

One thing I should have done is to shine a direct light source onto his face so his eyes would be visible. Too lazy to go back and do that now.

20200221_214918.jpg.54a04336fbf86c6fda2bdecda01b0cf8.jpg

20200221_214937.jpg.b45eb5e64e836270b216719c7799424d.jpg

20200221_215450.jpg.ce486cd256747ad19c37659983ab41ac.jpg

Pros:

  • Awesome head sculpt.
  • Great pose-ability.
  • Other than the vehicle mode's front wheels showing up on his back, very little kibble.
  • His fists open and close.
  • 'Bot mode looks awesome, period.
  • He feels like a solid toy.
  • The transformation is fun.
  • He's a significant upgrade from his Siege version.

(Decpti)Cons:

  • Vehicle mode is OK but looks lacking when compared to his G1 counterpart from 36 years ago.
  • Very few gimmicks and play value with the trailer.
  • Unlike the knees, the elbows are not double jointed so there's only a 90-degree elbow bend.
  • His plasma rifle looks like a tiny pea shooter.
  • Voyager Class in size, Leader Class in price.

Most likely specific only to the figure I received, Prime's right eye appears to have a molding defect so it looks like his eye is damaged. Of course, since I'm too lazy to use proper lighting, you can't see that in the images above.

My biggest complaint is with the trailer. It pretty much raised the price of the toy but it offers very little with gimmicks and play value. If the trailer had the care and attention the cab received, then I would be singing its praises. As is, the trailer feels like a flimsy, lame, and expensive add-on.

Despite my complaints, I would give this toy a borderline recommendation. As much as I complain about his trailer, this version of Combat Potato Chip Cart Optimus Prime is awesome. As much as I complain about... well, everything, I'm still glad I made this purchase. Yes, I will complain I spent money on yet another Optimus Prime toy.

I was surprised by Smokescreen.  Hoping for a Bluestreak retool.  Megatron doesn't look like an improvement over the G2 version of the Siege release that I have.  Runamuck, Allicon, Quintession, Snapdragon and Doubledealer have also leaked.  There's series of Siege redecos from the upcoming Netflix series, too.  Hopefully the implied Galvatron is revealed soon.

Earthrise Optimus looks pretty cool.  He could use a better gun, Roller, and the trailer just needs a complete redo, but the main figure looks like the best CHUG Optimus yet.  Are his eyes blue?  I thought they were shown as yellow, but I know the hands went from blue to gray and back to blue on the protos.

And Titan Scorponok is up for pre order on BBTS, and his height is allegedly...  11 inches.

So Skorponok is only as tall as Commander Skyfire?  WTF Hasbro?  I wait all this time for a Titan Skorponok and it's only going to be roughly the same size as what would have been an older Leader scale figure?  It will barely look comparable to a small Combiner at that height!

I pre-ordered it like an idiot, because maybe it's a misprint.  I have a bad feeling it isn't.

Also pre-ordered Studio Blitzwing, Sky Lynx, and Allicon.

Wheeljack is in my pile of loot, but still waiting on Optimus and Starscream to get there.

I would guess it's a misprint. Titan Scorponok is listed at $160. That was Titan Omega 3&6 Fish Oil Taco Pizza Supreme's MSRP as well and he's 19.5 inches. It wouldn't make sense for Scoponok to be the same size as Commander Jetfire/Skyfire but cost twice as much.

Since doing an extremely stupid amount of overanalysis is my thing, taking a look at a screenshot of the BBTS page:

bbts_001.jpg.ad60bd63fe374124bdc8e7d847981a7c.jpg

With Scorponok showing up before Sky Lynx, that suggests Scorponok's product page was uploaded shortly after Sky Lynx's page. This also suggests Sky Lynx's product description was written before Scorponok's.

Sky Lynx's product description:

  • 11 inches (28cm)
  • Made of plastic
  • Earthrise figures allow fans to build out epic space battle scenes
  • Figures can connect to expand the battlefield
  • Converts from bird and lynx modes into combined bird-lynx beast mode in 22 steps
  • Converts from bird to shuttle transport mode in 35 steps
  • Converts from lynx to Modular Battle Station mode in 20 steps
  • Instructions may or may not include English translation

Scorponok's product description:

  • 11 inches (28cm)
  • Made of plastic
  • Earthrise figures allow fans to build out epic space battle scenes
  • Figures can connect to expand the battlefield
  • Converts into Modular Battle Station mode in 39 steps
  • Instructions may or may not include English translation

I marked the descriptions unique to Sky Lynx and Scorponok in different colors. What I think is, the person who was responsible for the product descriptions didn't pay attention. It looks like only the product descriptions unique to the toys were inserted and no one bothered to check whether the size was correct. Sky Lynx's size was carelessly copied directly onto Scorponok's product description.

In the upcoming months before release, you'll likely see additional video and photos of the prototype and those will give you a much better idea about the size.

  • Thanks 1
