★ DD Manicure ★ Update pg.5

Hi everyone!

I love the look of nails on Dollfies and I've been attempting for the last few weeks to make my own so that I can have adorable nails on my girls and maybe eventually open commissions. I'll be buying some charms and cute decorations for them soon, but i wanted to get the basics right before adding too much.

 

So far i've made about 5 sets, these are my last two:

 

French Tip

 

 

 

Red Glitter

 

 

 

They are fairly flexible to prevent breaking, and so far i've not had any fall off even with an excursion for a photo shoot (though i have been careful with them). They don't require modding to the hands and they are removable without any damage if desired. They aren't perfect but I've learned a lot and I know my next sets will be a lot neater with better colour combos, which i will update pics of here when i make some ^__~

 

I'd love to know what people think, if they'd be interested in having them for their dolls and any suggestions or pointers

That's such a great idea, I love the french tips. I'd definitely want some for my girls too! ^-^

I'm interested in some hands with painted longer nails/claws for some of my girls. So if you do get to the point of commissions, let us know!

If it's okay for me to ask, what sort of pricing would be recommended for the manicures? I know the time/costs I put in, but I'd love to know what people would be willing to pay and if it will cover them for potential commissions

I was thinking around that price range too actually! Then maybe a bit more for those with added charms (such as bows, flowers, etc)

I was thinking of commission based where people send their hands and fill out an order form as soon as the decorations I ordered arrive. I definitely would like to sell premade ones as well I just have to wait until I can buy some hands ^__^ which would be your preference?

I like the nails, they're pretty. Nice job on them. In my opinion it'd be easier to buy the nails and then the owner puts them on... Since you are not in USA, the shipping costs would be really high for me (for example) to send hands and then pay to have them sent back as well. That's just my opinion though, I'm sure other people feel differently or don't mind. ^__^

Thanks for the advice I make the nails directly on to the hands though so that wouldn't necessarily be possible for me. Each DD hand has different nails too (they're different shapes/directions) so I couldn't really make it without the hand. I do understand what you're saying though, maybe I should mainly sell pre made hands. Or would you be interested if I sold the hands along with the manicure (so I have the pair of hands already, you buy the hands and the manicure from me and then I complete your custom order and ship them). Hmm I'm not sure, but you've given me something to think about

I'd much prefer to buy hands that are done directly from you, than add the cost of shipping to you just for you to ship back. You could buy batches of hands and simply divide the cost of shipping between all pairs, or something like that. eg. 10 pairs of hands costs $20 to ship to you so you just add $2 per pair to the hand+manicure price.

That's what I think would be good too I've been looking into buying a batch of hands from volks directly and I think that's the best way to go for now so that it saves double shipping. I'll be putting an order in with them tomorrow and when they arrive I'll start working on some ^__^! Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it

Ooo, I really love the claw look~ It would really be good for a mistress-type character/DD or to just spice up any character/DD! :3 I also absolutely love the glimmering clear nails that your Miki was modeling~ so beautiful. If you ever open shop and I have the money saved up~ I would love to commission you.

Anywho though, I wish you the best with your advances in DD manicuring! : D

I also think it'd be easier if you bulk bought hands + included the shipping costs of that in the price... Maybe if people wanted a certain style of hands they could either buy & ship to you -- or put in a preorder for whenever the next time you buy hands..? Hmmm although that might be a bit complicated until you figure out an ordering schedule....

 

For price... Depending on complexity and style, I'd be willing to pay $10-20 on top of the price of hands + shipping...

I didn't know my girl would need this before I saw it. Now it's crucial.

 

Some people in my BJD comm have actually made these nails from drinking straws! Just clear drinking straws cut and glued to the dolls. Seems so simple it's kinda interesting. What kinda material are you using? Or is it a secret maybe?

 

Anyways they look amazing and as a person who used to do nails for real girls, these look very legit to me!

Thanks Ayuuya, that's exactly what i've been planning on doing ^__^ I am currently waiting on an order for small ribbons and other charms to decorate the nails with so when my order for the hands arrives i'll be able to make some even better designs with more details ~!

The preorder is a good idea, thanks for that I'll definitely have to think about it, i'll probably use my first big order to sell premade hands and then maybe for the next order i'll be able to take some custom orders for when the batch arrives.

That's a huge compliment, i'm so glad you find them realistic I have heard of the straw method before but i found they were too easy to break off which got frustrating after spending so long fiddling with the little pieces of straw. I eventually managed to create my own way of doing them as you see now, maybe later i'll be able to make a tutorial or something but for now i'm still working out the kinks and finalizing my method so it's perfect for sale and also for my own girls

 

Also i'll be working on another few ideas this weekend so look forward to some more example pictures

x3Ashley these nails you've made are simply a-m-a-z-i-n-g~!!! I've been keeping track of this thread, but only just now got the chance to sit at my computer so I could comment.

 

Style/Designs- My favorite set so far are the french tips. It's so simple yet lovely at the same time Would you be able to do the french tips shorter? For certain girls I would want shorter nails and for others the longer look you're already doing will be great I'm really looking forward to see the next design you do with the bows & charms I'd also love to see basic colors (red nails for my Seraphina!).

 

Pre-Made Sets vs Commissions- If you put up pre-made sets for sale I would happily buy them (especially if it were a whole set of hands done in the same style)~ But I think it would also be nice to just take on commissions for people who would rather send you the hands they already own. I understand that for some people that would be more costly, but for others it may be more convenient especially if they already have many sets of hands. I'm game for either

 

Cost- Depending on style & complexity I'd pay between $25-$35 for the manicures done to the hands I've always wanted to have something like this for my girls so I'm willing to pay good money for beautiful work (especially durable work)

I suppose you're right, I would always be open to the idea of doing commissions for those willing to ship hands to me. When all of my final materials arrive ill open up a premade thread and also a commission one for those interested and see how it goes ^__^

I am definitely trying to make them durable, so far I haven't had any problems but Care should still be taken when handling them to lower the risk. I haven't had them go through shipping before but I've got a good packaging system sorted out so they should definitely withstand it. I've been thinking about offering a test pair, maybe asking for someone kind enough to send me a pair of hands to test on and ship back for them to try out and see if its okay for them. Right now I only have the opinion of myself and my boyfriend so it's hard to know since everyone handles their dollfies differently. It would be a good way to gauge any changes I need to make before commissions ^__^

Oh and yes of course! I can shape them any size or length so it wouldn't be a problem to have shorter nails and im definitely going to be making some shorter for both premades and my own DDs. I have a beautiful Mariko (one of my dream girls!) coming in with a bunch of extra hands that I just can't wait to decorate and she will have shorter French tips French tip seems to be overwhelmingly the most popular so I will focus a lot on that style (it's my favourite too) but I'll also be testing out plain colours as you said and other styles

 

Wow this turned into a long post haha, sorry! My boyfriend took a quick pic of the claw nails for me the other day while he was doing a photoshoot (excuse the panties haha) so here's a better quality image of them to make up for the amount of reading

Of course! I'll be doing simple designs as well as more detailed decorated ones. I didn't order any MDD hands in this batch for premades but next batch i'll definitely get some, otherwise i'd also be open to commissions ~

 

Edit: WIP testing out gold nails and decorations ^__^ These are a shorter manicure style.

I adore the gold on them! It looks so good in person. I also have silver that i think will work well too ~

 

 

I'm also really looking forward to getting a pair! I wanted Celeste to have all of the bells and whistles, and it was sad to me that her nails had to be so plain. But not anymore wahaha!
