Boiling super sculpey for DD head modifications

Recommended Posts

katzilla

Hi! When looking for better options other than epoxy sculpt for additive sculpted modifications to DD heads I stumbled across the following info about boiling super sculpey (a much safer option than risking baking a head) for use on modifying a Munny - http://becircle.com/modifying_your_munny_sculpey_modeling_clay

I'm really interested in trying this method to both fix a slight dremel mishap when opening the eyes of a closed eye ddh-08 head (her left eye socket ended up a little too widely open ) and for giving the same girl a pair of elf ears. I was curious as to whether anyone here has tried this method and, if so, does anyone have any pictures of their results ?

The issue I can see is that the sculpey once dry might not adhere strongly to the resin. Plus the amount of heat needed to cure the sculpey could cause some warping.

Milliput superfine might work better as it cures cold and is even easier to sand and paint than sculpey

Milliput, like most epoxy putties, is great for Resin work but for vinyl I'm not so sure, hence wanting to give the sculpey boiling mod method a try. I know Munnys tend to be a much denser harder vinyl compared with DD heads so that's where I'm a little bit hesitant.

I'm sure I've seen some nice eye repairs on DD using milliput but can't remember where. But I see your point, the cured sculpey is much closer to the vinyl than the cured milliput in terms of texture and weight.

This is where junk heads come in handy! Sadly I have none for testing purposes right now >_<

Decided to dive in and give it a go today as don't want to have a perfectly good head go to waste. Managed to pick it up close to Doll Point retail price rather than the usual inflated buying service price, probably as it was the closed eye version, so definitely worth the risk! Will let you know how I go ^^

Very excited to say, after a test on my the lower-did eye-well area fix I needed to do, this works! As I was a bit nervous about leaving the head in boiling water for the full curing time I kept removing it every minute to check on the progress but so excited about the results. Still some sanding to go and want to work on correcting the upper lid area to match but very happy with how things are going so far. Will have to post progress pics later

Nice! How much boiling did it take in the end? Does it seem fully cured?

Actually, as it was just a very thin patch where I'd patched up the eyes it only took about 5 minutes, and yes - hard & fully cured It will be interesting to see how long it takes for the ears after I get working on them, though - I am thinking perhaps closer to the typical 10-15 minutes it would usually be to bake, will have to wait and see.

@Amara77, as I'm working the next 2 days will try to get some pics up on Thursday.

Sorry been so slow getting pics up of my progress. I had planned to earlier in the week but time got away from me. Still don't have the shape of the eye wells quite right for my liking but should at least post up some progress pics some time in the next 24 hours.

Ok, took my progress photos yesterday and apologies for not getting them uploaded sooner. Ok, well there is definitely some sanding needed to remove the extra cured Sculpey residue on the head around the outside of the eye-wells (testing with some 3M sanding pads shows that this wont be a problem) and to smooth out and perfect the shape of the eye-well area a little. Airbrushing will still be needed to blend the Sculpey modded area with the rest of her skin tone to make it less obvious. However, for a head that was otherwise completely junked, things are so far going brilliantly!

Just to add, standard Super Sculpey beige is a little too dark and cures a little too semi translucent to be compatible with DD normal. Hence, what I used was Super Sculpey Living Doll light beige blended about 50 / 50 first with Sculpey III ballet pink (I think the same colour that is now re-labelled "Ballerina", this was from a collection of Sculpey III colours I have had for a while) and then a very very small amounts of Sculpey III yellow until I reached just the right colour. The resulting colour really isn't that bad!

Also to add, just like when baking Sculpey you can work the boiling process in stages to build up layers to make things easier eg. start with your base shape to work on - boil - work on next stage of sculpting - boil ...and so on & so forth.

So happy, learning that this works opens up so many possibilities!

I want to ask whether anyone has tried using sculpey with their mould maker added as a softening agent? I've read that adding it to sculpey gives the sculpey a more flexible finish which might make it more suited to using on vinyl.
