WIP/Custom Diary: DDDy Super Sonico

Super Sonico is one of my very favorite characters. I cosplay her, and collect way too many figures, art prints, and small goods with her. Even my username is a reference to a trading card designed by the same artist who created Sonico, haha.

A while back, I decided to make a custom DD in her likeness too. I like the VMF50 Sonico, but:

1. It's 50cm tall. Sonico and Miku are both 5'2" - if I ever get the DD Miku, I'd want them to match in height.

2. I love Sonico's cheerful smile even more than the serene face on the Yamato sculpt.

Here's the beginning of my work! (Pictured with the Nendoroid face I was using for reference while painting.)

This was my first time ever doing epoxy and Dremel mods on a doll head. I used a stained head I already had lying around, just in case I messed up. Some faint staining from the eyebrows is still visible, but her wig should distract from that once she's all put together.

My next step is making her outfit and custom eyes. I have some eye blanks on the way for custom eyes that I'll design and print out.

I'll likely make a few of her outfits, but I'm starting with her Covers album outfit since it's easy to find the shoes and I wanted an excuse to get the Volks microphone.

Her body should be arriving from Mandarake this week! I need to hurry on making clothes and headphones now.

Honestly, I'd think Sonico would benifit the most from a Peach Pai bust. Given most imagery as well as the series, I think the Pai bust fits best for her overall look. Just my 2¢. Plus, the mouth mod and faceup feel more right than the Yamato/AP/VMF Sonico.

Thanks! Her body came in today, but her wig is still in the mail, and I haven't made any clothes or accessories yet. So, she's just a random cheerful blonde girl with orange headphones right now. Whoops.

Hmm, that's definitely something to consider! Do you know if Peach Pai makes any option parts that are roughly the same size as the default DDDy bust? The squishy aspect would be really cute and suitable, but I don't want her to be too top-heavy. A lot of fan art portrays Sonico as mostly just busty, but Tsuji Santa's art, and the official figures, portray her as a more hourglass shape. I'd want my doll to match the canon art.

I'm not too familiar with Peach Pai, though. I only know of the really ridiculously big bust parts they make. That's more what I'd figure for Pochaco.

Personally, I'm not the one to ask as far as the Pai bust. Better to ask Baldylox about that, though I've seen strings of posts around with discussions abound. I've always liked Sonico's older design, saw a comparison somewhere online showing older art and figures were much more curvy/busty compared to the more slim version we have now. Again, just preference, plus it's easier to find clothes for the DDDy body anyway. ^_^

Getting the body just right has definitely been something of a challenge. Sonico's portrayal varies pretty drastically, even with figures produced around the same time. @___@ Like these four figures in my collection range from 2012 (Left) to 2014 (right), and they're all kinda different. Like the older one to the left looks more like a regular Dollfie Dream with the L bust would match better.

For my doll, I'm trying to go with the portrayal around #3 and #4, because that's the most consistent with her creator's current illustrations.

Update! I made her eyes today. Her wig still hasn't arrived, so she's closet cosplaying Al Azif for now. CLOSE ENOUGH.

Another progress shot! I made the skirt and T-shirt for her first outfit today, and her temporary wig arrived in the mail. I grabbed this one from Kemper while I'm waiting on her nice wig from CoolCat.

Quick update!! I finished her headphones last night. They're made from a CoolCat headband, black pleather, two earpiece covers from phone headsets from my job, wood, sculpey, and jewelry wire.

What an awesome job you did. She looks like such a happy and cheerful girl and so different from the other Sonico looks.

Super Sonico is so cute, i love her! I have a few figures of her as well. One big and two small/chibi ones. I recognized the face at the start of your topic! You did an amazing job on capturing her expression. I can't wait to see how she fully turns out, her outfits are adorable! But i imagine their pretty hard to make especially with her shapely body.

I love how your Sonico is coming along! I'm also in progress with a Super Sonico DD ^_^ They should hang out! So much props for modding her open mouth. Looking awesome and those headphones look amazing!
