Eiko82 Posted May 10, 2017 Hey everyone, listen up. We're doing a small comparison between Smart Doll Mirai and Smart Doll Kurenai. Which one is the cutest? That's up to you to decide. Mirai (on the left) is from October 2014 and was one of the first Smart Doll batches sold. Kurenai (on the right) went on sale in April 2017. I was actually really surprised to discover that Kurenai is taller than Mirai. I guess somewhere in the past 3 years, Danny Choo changed the Smart Doll body slightly. 'Cause putting these two side-by-side, you can see Kurenai is a little taller. Profile photo It seems that the neck pieces are also different. The Mirai body (on the left) has empty space in the neck whereas Kurenai (on the right) doesn't. Tbh I find both girls very cute. It's hard for me to pick a favourite. I do think it's a plus that all the new Smart Dolls come with soft vinyl hands. My Mirai's default hands are hard vinyl which led to one of her wrist joints snapping. Luckily, I got a free replacement thanks to the warranty. I didn't really do much comparison with regards to posing. At first glance, they seem to be able to do the same poses. My Mirai poses slightly easier but that's mainly due to Kurenai being new. Hope this was useful in some way ^___^ To end, here are two pics of Mirai and Kurenai. They even look cute wearing each other's wigs. Living at my place: Rise (DD Rise Kujikawa), Chie (Smart Doll Mirai) and Aisha (Smart Doll Kurenai)
SakuraRose Posted May 10, 2017 Kurenai is so pretty~ Been wanting to see owner pics of her so thank you. I think her and Mirai are both cute in their own way.
K-2 Posted May 10, 2017 I was actually really surprised to discover that Kurenai is taller than Mirai. I guess somewhere in the past 3 years, Danny Choo changed the Smart Doll body slightly. 'Cause putting these two side-by-side, you can see Kurenai is a little taller. You might disassemble Mirai to check to see if her Jeton spine is straight. Years of posing can leave kinks in the Jeton joints shortening the overall height. Then again, she might just be shorter.
Daisy-chan Posted May 11, 2017 Oh wow, Kurenai's profile is gorgeous. After seeing her next to Mirai, I definitely think Kurenai was Danny's response to the complaint about SmartDolls' flat faces. But I have to admit, both Mirai and Kurenai are total cuties!

But I have to admit, both Mirai and Kurenai are total cuties! At the very first sight, Kurenai persuaded me to bring her home. Yes, definitely gorgeous and bright. If we use IdolMaster's categories, Mirai is Cute while Kurenai is Passion. When you have them in front of you, they really do "project" that sort of "appeal". @Eiko82 Regarding their heights, agree with K-2, could you check the heads and neck? You might not have fit Kurenai's head tightly enough. And Mirai's spine posture looks a little bent from the profile pic.
Eiko82 Posted May 12, 2017 I checked her spine and it's straight. I think Danny might've minorly tweaked the body over the years. Living at my place: Rise (DD Rise Kujikawa), Chie (Smart Doll Mirai) and Aisha (Smart Doll Kurenai)
velocitycurve Posted May 16, 2017 I checked her spine and it's straight. I think Danny might've minorly tweaked the body over the years. I actually like that they're slightly different heights. Gives them some individuality.

cirquemom Posted May 21, 2017 I actually like that they're slightly different heights. Gives them some individuality. I agree. Except I would like one a little shorter, not taller. Thanks for posting those pictures, they're great.
Merlinkia Posted May 22, 2017 Thanks for posting! I love when people post detailed comparisons like this. I makes life easier for everyone else. My best friend is getting moonlight, and she already owns an ebony from right when ebony was released so I'll be curious to see if there is a height difference there too. cirquemom Posted May 23, 2017 I checked her spine and it's straight. I think Danny might've minorly tweaked the body over the years. That often happens, especially if he upgraded the molds sometime during the process.
Eiko82 Posted February 16, 2018 This was driving me nuts for months but I finally figured out why my Mirai looks bad wearing the 'Keep calm' shirt and my Kurenai does not. The old body has a much more curved back. This gave my Mirai a 'boobs in your face' look whenever she wore it. I think that I'm gonna save up for a new body. Just prefer the overall feel and look of it. Living at my place: Rise (DD Rise Kujikawa), Chie (Smart Doll Mirai) and Aisha (Smart Doll Kurenai)
It_Maybe459 Posted February 17, 2018 Wow the 2014 has a really noticeable swayed back. Wonder how much that would affect other outfits not just t-shirts?
Hoshiko_Blue Posted February 17, 2018 I didn't know Danny changed the bodies at some point, this is definitely interesting to see. Have you noticed any other difference between the two, besides the back and the vinyl used for the hands?
Eiko82 Posted February 17, 2018 Wow the 2014 has a really noticeable swayed back. Wonder how much that would affect other outfits not just t-shirts? I have the hippie top and the old body doesn't have much effect on it. This could be due to the fact that it's a more baggy top. But when you put on a Smart Doll T-shirt or cardigan, it gets a bit more noticeable. I didn't know Danny changed the bodies at some point, this is definitely interesting to see.Have you noticed any other difference between the two, besides the back and the vinyl used for the hands? The only other difference I've noticed is the neck pieces as mentioned in my first post. I have the feeling that it helps prevent 'spinning head' syndrome. As far as I can tell, the rest of the body (arms and legs) have remained the same. Just prefer the overall feel and look of it. I was about to make a post in the Melody thread but I guess it's relevant here that I noticed there was a difference in the body of my older Mirai and Melody and I couldn't figure out what the problem was. I notice it the most when I try to put my dolls on their tripods (I have two of the tripods - not just the telescopic stand) and I couldn't figure out why I was able to get Melody on the tripod much easier than Mirai but now this makes sense. I also noticed that Melody had a "softer" feel than Mirai (my Mirai is made from the harder vinyl I guess so that explains that difference also). I'm still debating on whether to buy a new Mirai to get a newer body or not. I don't really have a problem with the old body - it's more of me being picky that my Melody and Mirai bodies aren't exactly the same. (if Mirai or Melody was my only doll I wouldn't care either way because I wouldn't have noticed since there's nothing to compare to).

Mizuumi-no-Otome Posted February 24, 2018 I never knew the bodies had changed! I remember the back on the two I had being like the 2014 one, I always found it really annoying that I'd be constantly adjusting the chest piece to make them look a little straighter, rather than looking like they're about to twerk. Seems I should have waited a year or two before getting them because the dolls are all looking much better and I wasn't too attached to the ones I had. Still not pretty enough to pick them over a DD imo but perhaps when the cortex dolls come out lol Thanks for this comparison!

cfx Posted February 24, 2018 I don't think it was an option until recently. He sold the bodies separately a couple of years ago but then they weren't available until a few months ago.
