Juu-Yuki Faceups and Dolly Repaint

I'm impressed. Very impressed.

I would normally spray the head with a sealant before I paint but since it's freezing here in Canada the sealant won't stick.

I will just start painting without it (don't worry, the paint comes off easily and won't stain).

Could You say, what kind of paints do You use?

Because even on our forum there were cases of staining from faceup paints.

I use a mix of acrylic, and watercolour pencil (I just take it from the pencil with a brush). They never gave me any trouble.

The hardest to remove and does leave a bit of staining is the paint VOLKS uses. I have no idea what they put in that stuff but it is very pigmented and a pain to remove.

Colours such as purple, bright reds and yellow tends to be a pain to remove also. I would stay away from those colours but if you really must use them than put a light coat of another colour under it first.

This is getting really long but one more thing for those who are having staining problems, you could give the head one of those stain treatments. Sakura wrote a guide: http://www.dollfiedreams.com/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=1887. It is a good way to remove stains on the body but I won't use it for the head molds. The chemicals can discolour the head and it is very hard to fix. Take a very high grade waterproof sand paper, 2000 would work fine and start buffing the stain away under water.

I think they use stencils (like below), airbrushes, and some industrial paints.

Or maybe it's even automated and uses some kind of screen printing.

I didnt know that was a stencil, I thought that was just a mold .

I forgot where I heard this from but I heard they hand paint all their faceups. Some of the eyebrows and eyelashes are very thin, especially on my Rina which would be hard to do with a stencil.

WOW!!

That is so cool to see! Coming from a background in the prototype market when I used to collect Star Wars toys, seeing "behind the scenes" pieces like this is really wonderful. Where did you get that pic from? Are there any articles or info about the process of making our DD's anywhere online? I would love to know more about the process and see pics of the factory where these are made.

I was always amazed at the process of making Star Wars toys back in the day so I really find it interesting to see a picture like that of a Dollfie. Thanks for posting that!

I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.

It's made of metal and may be very precise.

And all heads from one series are the same. Several hundreds (or more?). It's impossible to paint this by hand.

Unless "by hand" means stencils and airbrush, then yes

Many stencils, because every part of the faceup and every color has it's own stencil.

Btw scale models, for example, have readable letters like 0.5mm high and it's mass produced, mainly using screen print.

Juu-Yuki is right, it's from DC site.

He has also a movie from Obitsu factory (in Culture Japan series) http://www.crunchyroll.com/culture-japan/episode-12-food-samples-dolls-and-ryokan-574048

I like how you've changed Sakura's faceup some more! Her eyebrows appear to have moved up a bit to match more to Rina's eyebrow position!

It'll be nice to see her in person with these changes!

Our apartment is too small to host a meetup!

Just drag Angeli and some others there. OwO

Hmmm? Did I miss something?

I think Juu-yuki wants to have a tea party with you and me in my tiny apartment. If I do some serious cleaning we could actually do this..

Sigh... my poor girl T^T

It was a nice sunny day today so I thought I would bring both Alice and Sakura outside to seal their faceups. After spraying both, my sister thought it would be funny to push me. I ended up knocking both Sakura and Alice off the table and what do you know... the ground is solid concrete.

It ended up denting and smudging the sealant. Alice's nose, cheek and forehead was a complete mess. I had to scrub off the sealant for both girls. Since the stuff dried out really fast and is solid resin, it was a pain to scrub off. Sakura didn't suffer too much damage but I can't say the same for my poor Alice. I have a meetup next week too. I hope I could fix this.... and fast....

Don't worry and hang in there, I know you can do it!

Still, that's a really bad thing to happen...

Just remind your sister not to jump you around your dolls.
