Experiences With People Outside the Hobby?

I haven't taken Aoi out alot as to me not having a lot of time to do so. I did however take her with me to a con a few months ago(my first con btw) that had a BJD meet. I generaly had a good experience. I wasn't the only guy attending, but was the only guy with a doll present. Ther was one other DD owner ther but i didn't get a chance to talk to her much as to most of the other gals came up and crownded me and kept asking questions about her. Most people loved her "anime" look, espcially her eyes. ( and yes i mean the ones in her head). I even had a few older ladies, probably in there late to mid 40's coming up to me and taking pics of me holding her. I admit i had some anxiety at first, but it vanished rather quickly. I'd say it was a great day to be a Dollfie Dream Daddy!!!

I'm really glad your first meetup experience was a good one! It sounds like you and Aoi were both pretty popular there. Did you happen to snap any pics while you were there? Would be cool to see how it went.

I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.

Yes in fact i do have pics i have neglected to put up for over 2 months now. I didn't get to take as many as i had hoped cause of so many people wanting to talk to me. I also got to showcase that volks outfit i got a few weeks before that meet. I'll try to get them us soon.

Cool! I look forward to seeing those! Especially with Aoi in that outfit you showed me, I know she looked great in it.

I ran into a really sweet older couple downtown while carrying around Sakura and Yui (Mariko-sensei). They were really hoping I got my DDs from the flea market down the street. It was sad to tell them that it is a lot harder than that to get a hold of a DD and that I got them online. The husband even asked one more time about if I got them from the flea market just in case.

I've had a few good and bad experiences here and there.

At some point in time I was really into hosting meet-ups for folks within the San Francisco area, but I also held one that was within my own little town. It was a small chocolate shop that I had come to learn one day that they had a good sized back room that was available for events. So, me who doesn't like to attract any attention, carried my doll (At this time I had a Dollmore Uri Rich) to the store and asked to talk to the owner. She was so cheerful and absolutely LOVED my doll. When I told her I wanted to hold a meet-up with a lot of them she was so excited. She asked question after question and when I offered to let her hold the Uri Rich she seemed as if she was the happiest person in the world at that second.

The day we had the meet she kindly asked for us to group all our dolls together (though we would have done this anyways) and took so many picture. She was so sweet, and now whenever I go into that shop she asks me if I'll hold another meet for them so she can see even prettier dolls. It is too bad I don't host meets anymore and I'm the only one in this area who collects so...>.<;

As for actual experiences with DD, I haven't really taken them out beyond to another doll meet in San Francisco and I won't be bringing them to another with that group due to rude comments, so I don't know if I'll really ever get a experience with people outside of the hobby with them. I don't bring out the dolls other then to meets so no real chances to have any sort of experiences. ^^;;

Lumirei

I have only brought Lumière to the BJD panels at the anime convention I attend every year. Every year I am the only one who brings a DD and she doesn't usually get any attention and I feel out of place with her there but this isn't exactly a bad experience. Other than that I never take them out of the house because I am shy and can't quite deal with people being rude about things I enjoy. I did one time show Lum to my family that was visiting from NY and they used to live in japan and were very interested in her and asked a lot of questions about her

Happily at home:Lumière, Yoko, Nia, Lily, Vivienne, Altria, Lilith, Claire, Sakuya, Sakura, Haruhi, Aurelia, Melty, Miyako, Unnamed 03, Mariko (student), Momo, Miku, Snow Miku and Asuna.

Awaiting: Kirito

So, I've got two girls at work, and it's interesting how many people have stopped by and started talking with me because of them.

The one issue I'm having is trying to explain how limited they are. It turns out there are a lot of people on my new floor that collect dolls, but porcelain and Barbies. Nearly all of them want one now, which is great, but, they're all shocked when I tell them I had to get them through a lottery.

Haruka gets a lot of compliments when I travel places with her and my family. She also gets some pictures, one notable one with the host of "Team Magma Bingo" at a convention, who was dressed as Pokemon ORAS' Courtney, in 2017.

I used to take a BJD with me out shopping when I was back home in Ohio, but I haven't done so now that I live on the East Coast.  The people here aren't as open-minded and friendly, and being a Gothic Otaku, I already get stared at when I go places.

I might start taking Miku out with me at times, once I get a carry case I like for her.  I saw the space cat one on one of the other threads, so once I get one, I may put her in it and go to the mall...just because! @onion9@

I find people are kinder if I take my dolls to tangentially connected places. For example, anime lovers, figure collectors, cosplay/fashion lovers, and sewing stores see the value of the dolls more (or at least think they are cute). However, EVERYONE who hasn't seen them before balks at the price tag without fail. I get far less push back about my resin girls, but I think that's because they have more of the traditional "doll like" aesthetic so people see them as worth more. Most people look at dollfie dreams and go "my, that's a big figma".

People totally outside the hobby with zero interest in dolls, anime, sewing or collecting? They are very fast to say "creepy and expensive". I think it's the whole lack of context thing.

Always makes me laugh when it's someone who I know blew $1000+ gambling at Casinos several times a year though. To me, that hobby would be stressful (I much prefer the Smaug method of hoarding my money) and yet you won't see me saying "betting on the ponies is expensive too" because it ain't my business. If it isn't hurting others, my place is to bite my tongue and keep my opinions where they belong.
