Doll Photography in Public

Recommended Posts

Sarah

I was part of a local bjd/smart doll group years back that used to do doll photography in public, like every month would be a new location with the address sent to the group. At the time I had no issue taking a doll out for photos, but one of the meets ended up being a graveyard… It was way too morbid for me and I left as soon as I arrived and haven’t done one since.

Since then, circumstances have changed. I have own 10 acres of farmland and I have a family. Though this property has many scenic spots, I haven’t had the courage or drive to take any pictures out here, despite having a doll that would look gorgeous if I just took the time… There is no way I would go out in public these days, but I’m kind of surprised I’m hesitant to go out on my own property when literally no one would see me. I don’t even like my family being aware of the fact that I adore some of these dolls. I keep ours in a china cabinet and they do look pretty there, but it would be a big deal if I were to take it out for pictures lol I’d feel kind of odd.

My girls reckon seeing humans on a doll sized railway is pretty strange. It should just be for dolls.

I took Asuna to London for a photoshoot yesterday.

People are fairly predictable. I got the usual "creepy doll" comments. Honestly what gave them that impression I don't know 😒.

I saw a few pro photographers doing human fashion shoots and honestly I attracted way more attention lol.

Quite a few people (usually guys) will ask you what you're doing then not stick around once they've assured themselves you're not a terrorist or something.

Yesterday I had a long conversation with a lady about BJDs. She wanted to know pretty much everything, so I infodumped. We met some Japanese tourists on a Harry Potter tour and Asuna was happy to stand up on a beer barrel for a while, so a few people got an interesting holiday pic to show the folk back home.

If you're nervous about taking your doll in public then conventions are a good way to get started. At larger anime themed events there are usually a few other BJDs too. Of course the most obvious events to look for are BJD themed events. Then you won't stand out at all.

I don't think I would dare, well, maybe at five in the morning during the summer holidays. Unfortunately the Netherlands is a bit a pain in the arse for anything that is not considered "normal", with people becoming bothersome quite quickly or wanting to "have a try".

I'm starting to play around with doll photography a little bit, and while I'm nervous to go outside, I think I'm going to give it a try once the weather warms up. I view most of my dolls as "too precious" to go outside, but I have a YMY/nendoroid doll hybrid (1/12 size) I'm itching to take some nice photos of. I want to spend more time outside this year and visit some local parks I've never gone to before, and I don't think it'd be too cumbersome to bring along a small doll in addition to my other stuff (I already always overpack so what's one more thing lol). If it goes well (and I'm not too anxious lol), I'll probably try doll photography in urban settings a try next. I visit NYC about once a year and there's so many cool locations in Manhattan that I think doll photography there could be really fun.

I'm mostly worried about little comments and being judged in passing, but I think there's a good chance this isn't a realistic concern on my part. I used to regularly watercolor paint in the library when I was in college, and doing that made me super nervous, but I was never once bothered. I'm not even sure how many people noticed what I was even doing, so I think this will be similar. I know I'll be quick and not in people's way, so fingers crossed I'll hardly be noticed and there won't be any opportunities for me to be approached lol

I would say it is, but not so much. I used to paint plein air occasionally, with a small portable setup like a pochade. Seeing someone who paints is unusual but it's "normal". In the end I stuck to just drawing on a sketchbook cause all it took was a family passing by and the kid would come up and start grabbing things. I've had unleashed dogs come up as well. They never got reeled back in.

Painting gear isn't expensive, so if a kid grabs the water cup or pokes the canvas it's not a big deal. There's also very little of substance to interact with. But a doll is expensive and photography gear is expensive, and a doll is practically begging to be grabbed and touched. Once you've set up a tripod, stand, and so on, you're kinda locked into place.

Not to scare you off but the bottom line is make sure you're in a place or at least an environment where people are civil cause there's a lot more at stake. I am amazed when I see photographers like Lemon consistently shoot dolls in busy public places and have nothing happen except someone being nosy or making a comment.

I will give you my few cents on the matter as there was a big discussion about that abuzz in the Japanese BJD side of xwitter and the fact I personally photograph my dolls outdoor alot.....

There was a somewhat recent incident where a castle located in Gunma prefecture banned photographing dolls on their premises due to an alleged incident between a life sized doll owner and a non doll owner. This lead to a discussion between the Japanese BJD owners whether it is considered rude to photograph your dolls outdoors. Some were like bc its otaku stuff it should be hidden away from the public and be photographed in discreet places, while others were like just follow the rules laid out if there is any.

While I understand there are people who are rather shy about their otaku hobbies because of the way people are viewing otakus, I think the general perception of otaku is way less negative than it used to be ten years ago because of the whole oshikatsu trend. In regards to the people saying you should go to a quiet area where noone can see you, I feel it isn't a feasible option for some people, especially for young women as they can be easily targeted by a not so nice passerby bc it is large doll plus you being a young woman. I could do this in a safer area of the town/city in Japan, but definitely not in the USA (where you live matters too btw bc yeah).

On top of it, our larger dollies are especially an unusual sight to the general person, so we will always attract attention no matter what. Therefore, it really makes me wanna emphasize the fact in the end, we should be mindful of others if we are photographing our dolls, follow any rules laid out and be considerate of our surroundings.

My opinion in the matter is I don't care as long as the rules are being followed. If someone says no doll photography or no photography at all on their premises, then I just respect that. Photographing dolls out and about is a privilege, and it is a privilege which can be revoked any time if someone in the hobby doesn't follow TPO.

One bad apple will spoil the rest, so yall be good so we can have fun with our dollies. 🍎

I’ve been taking my girls out a lot recently and haven’t had any problems. I keep them in the volks tote bag 90% of the time and only take them out to take photos or when I’m sat down somewhere and just wanna chill with them. I do try to stick to quieter places like parks and local gardens where I wont get in the way of anyone, but there’s always still people passing by.
Other than the odd stare of people wondering what the hell Im doing crouched down in a corner somewhere, I haven’t had any real negative interactions, if anything I’ve had more people compliment my dolls ^^  Worst encounter was just some kids yelling onii chan at me and then coming up asking what kinda doll my Sasara was lol I’m lucky my partner has been accompanying me during these outings which helps with my nerves and probably keeps people from bothering me too much, but I do wanna try going out with my girls even when they aren’t with me. In reality most people are too caught up in their own world to notice what you’re doing, and if they do even less are confident enough to just come up to you and bother you.

People will always judge and criticise you if you’re anything but ‘normal’. And even then people will judge you for something lol. Life is really too short to be worrying about what other people think of you, and as long as you aren’t in the way of anyone and considerate of the environment you’re in, I don’t see anything wrong with taking photos of dolls or any other type of anime merch. It’s part of the fun and enjoyment of owning them !
