Cheek blushing - is it always necessary?

This is a question that is sort of a quarter character concept and 3/4 painting.

 

It's something I normally like to see on dolls, and have on resin, but I'm wondering if it's always appropriate.

 

I'm doing a Rei doll, and I've mostly seen her done with blushing when I've looked at other faceups. But, when I look at the character she doesn't have the extra definition the blush would provide. Though this seems common in the character designs.

 

I know this is probably something I'm just going to have to make my own decision on in the end, but I'm curious what your opinions are on this when you do your faceups.

I always add a little blush. Some people likes that flat anime look about DDs but I find that if you don't blush them they look lifeless. It's a good way to wrap up a faceup session and bring the doll to life.

 

Just don't overdo it with white skin girls. Too much blushing makes them look.... messy and just... scary. They are called white skin for a reason. >^<

I already figured the blush would be the same color scheme I'd picked for the lips. Which is sort of pale apricot. I'd want a natural look blushing at best, not too yellow though.

I think that blushing helps add dimension to the face. If you don't want to give your doll a flushed look, pick a more subdued colour and work slowly to avoid adding too much emphasis~

I read somewhere that peach-colored blush looks more mature, and pink or rose tinted blush feels youthful or bashful. Putting blush along the cheekbone (under the 'apple' of the cheek) is more adult, and putting blush on the peak of the cheeks is more childish. If you want a shy/embarrased look go for the more childish options.

I agree on the "level" of blushing... It sorta depends on how you want the expression to be.. Childish/embarrassed, or a flushed,energetic look. It all depends on the moment when you're doing a face-up. I opted not to add blush because I haven't had much experience in doing face-ups Ever so , not to ruin a second attempt, I didn't do it.. Now, later on, if I feel Tana needs a re-do, I'll probably find someone else to do it... (or, spend weeks re-correcting my fumbled attempts!!)

Just to follow up here, though I did post the pictures, I did blush Rei's face when I did it.

 

The faceup is going to be redone though just because of the cheek stain and some small issues with the lips and eyebrows.

I probably am going to do it tomorrow. The weather will be warm and dry, I got the brush cleaner, and I have the day off as it's my wedding anniversary.

Well, the weather was finally nice and I'm finishing up the second version of Rei.

 

 

She's currently drying while I'm having dinner, but I'm happy with how she's going right now. Just blushing and lips left.

Of course... Right after I finish the last coat after blushing I drop the head and get a big crease on the brow...

She's a gift to a really dear friend, specifically a joint Christmas/Birthday present for last year. It's just taken me this long to finish her.

 

Evangelion is her favorite anime (though I'm rather fond of it myself) and since Rei was my favorite character I thought it would be fun to translate my impression of Rei into a something for her.

Awwww! That's so incredibly nice of you to do! If she's a fan of Eva, I'm sure she will love getting Rei! I just hope we get to see her again in some pics form her new owner. Or at the very least, we hear from you on what your friend thinks. It would suck to never hear about her again after this.
