More DIY Projects: Kumiko Lantern + Yukata & Kimono

Recommended Posts

I saw a Youtube video about Kumiko and thought that looks pretty, I'll will make something for my girls. Bare in mind I have minimal tools for wood working, and wasn't sure what I was getting myself into. After some thought I decided on making a room divider, 3 parts and about 50 x 15cm (I think) each panel. However, things started to go wrong as I was putting things together and panel started to warp and I was started to get tired of making the notches, also I didn't realize how much wood I needed. So I scrapped that idea and decided to make something smaller and reused what I have done and made a lantern instead. Which also took longer than I expected and found a USB LED light to put inside.

Now that I had a lantern I didn't have any clothes to go with it (I have DD kimonos, but done like the look of them). But I wanted a kimono for my Angel Philia girls. Making patterns aren't easy and took several iterations making paper patterns and testing them and then making small changes each time. Until I was somewhat satisfied with the pattern, and committed on testing it out on Kimono fabric that I bought some time ago in Japan. I didn't want to waste the material, so I modified the pattern in to a skimpy Yukata. I still need to make an Obi, however I just reused the Obi from my DD Yukata that I bought some time ago.

And here's the results:

Here's a more detailed look of the Yukata and Kimono, and also made some Obi's to go with them.

I chose to add a lining to prevent staining. I made a yukata without one and overlocked the edges however it took a long time to do and the arm hole didn't look good.

It took a long time to hand sew where it wasn't possible to use the sewing machine.

And finally bought more material :)

You always amaze me with your sewing skills.  These look amazing!  I especially love the short yukata setup, it's pretty but sexy too.  <3

I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.

Nice results on both the lantern and yukata’s.
Love the detailing you have done in the lantern. (CNC?)
