Little Witch Nobeta?

I'm surprised no one's posted about this game, being that it's essentially Doll Souls (no, I'm serious).

It's a souls-style game where many of the enemies are puppets imbued with souls, and almost all of them have adorable designs.

It's on the gentle side for a souls-like as has an easy mode available, but it's actually got quite a charming story. I fell in love the first time I played it, the ending did me an emotion. The MC comes to sympathize with some of the more powerful enemies you fight, and there's a genuine melancholy every time you beat them, even as you feel accomplished in beating a Monica boss that took you several tries.

The game is short, but has a surprising depth to its world, which is largely told (in Souls style) through item descriptions. Unlike Souls games the central thread of the plot is mostly told on-screen though, which I much prefer.

After you finish the game, there's a sort of picture-drama that provides a supplement to the story, adding a bit of flavor and going deeper into the MC's thoughts during the events of the game. It's interesting, and actually adds quite a lot, but it is a bit disappointing that this wasn't included in the game itself, as it's basically a retelling of the main story with more depth.

Still, it's hard to fault the game for that, given that it came out of nowhere and it's still great on its own. It's a very well-made experience, with a surprisingly compelling story, surprisingly tight gameplay, and one or two very surprisingly emotional moments.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. It’s in my backlog, but since I didn’t know much about it, I hadn’t planned on playing it for a while. Based on what you wrote, I might bump it up to the front of the list, so thanks!

Another similar game in my backlog is Witch Spring 3, where you play as a witch who supposedly controls dolls. I don’t know how big of a role they play in the game, but it might be relevant to the gamers here.

Lastly, I’ve mentioned this in passing before, but clearly someone at the game company Falcom is a doll person because the Trails (Kiseki) series makes many nods to the hobby. One character is obsessed with tiny dolls that cost a fortune, and even goes to a black market auction to bid on a “doll” who ends up being a live person. Every time I see a hard carrying case (particularly the official ones for Blythe) like the one she was smuggled into the auction house in, it reminds me of the game.

In later installments that I haven’t played yet (Hajimari no Kiseki), supposedly one character actually IS a BJD. I not so secretly hope that Volks turns her into an actual doll one day…

I'ved played this one would say it's good has different difficulty levels so most could play it being challenging but not too hard and the character designs are nice as others have said.
