DIY accessories and doll hairstyling tips

Recommended Posts

Resilient

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has come across websites who offer free advice on how to create your own accessories like head wear, shoes, books, etc. Anything that I can make myself to avoid spending money at the moment. I've started searching but if there's something I haven't seen yet, I'd like to see it.

Also, I suck at styling my dolls' hair. Any tips on how I can make something that has nothing to do with a simple braid ? I'd really like to give them some nice hair sometimes. I'm not into the complicated stuff.

Thanks for anyone who wants to share some knowledge on both topics,

Resilient

Not necessarily Smart Doll specific, but buying baby hair clips at the store can boost a hairstyle. They are usually small enough to work and even create cute pigtails ♥

I'm not sure if this is visible to people who don't have an account there, but there's some pretty in depth guides for making doll books on DoA

paperback books:  https://denofangels.com/tutorials/printing-tiny-books.203/

bound books: https://denofangels.com/tutorials/miniature-bound-books-volume-1-glue-binding.4/ and https://denofangels.com/tutorials/bound-books-for-bjds-volume-2-thread-bound-books.5/

other resources -

doll jewellery supplies info: https://wgrass.org/News/The-Ultimate-Guide-on-BJD-jewelry-supplies

tutorial for making shoe lasts for doll shoes (not free): https://wgrass.org/Shop#!/Digital-PDF-Tutorial-Making-shoelasts-for-BJD-doll-feet/p/436411100/category=126441263 (for certain types of shoes, making a last is necessary to get the right shape)

tutorial for making shoe lasts (free, on DoA https://denofangels.com/threads/diy-shoe-lasts-tutorial-heel-feet.801346/#post-12640749

shoe-making compendium: http://fashiondollshoes.blogspot.com/p/basic-instructions.html (it's technically for fashion dolls but the techniques should be applicable to doll shoe-making of most kinds)

simple old-fashioned hat making: https://www.cynthiahoweminiatures.com/hatmaking1.htm (I've personally tried this one and found it easy even at larger scales)

shoe patterns from scargeear on DA:

(most of them are for 70cm+ dolls, but people on DoA have reported being able to successfully scale them down to as small as MSD scale, so you should be able to get it to fit ok on a SmD)

As for other kinds of head accessories, small jewellery charms and decorative beads can be useful for making cute clips. If you can buy or make doll sized plain headbands you could also glue the charms/beads to those too. Some human-sized bracelets (stretchy types work better) also make decent head accessories or belts if you alter them a little.

this one might be kind of niche, but there's a cute headdress/bonnet pattern here for cheap: https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/851319433/easy-lolita-bonnet-headdress-pdf-sewing?ref=yr_purchases

it's customizeable to several sizes including 1/3 and 1/4.

sorry for so many links, I have a ton of stuff bookmarked so I thought I might as well share it all. Hope some of this is helpful!

Small clips like this:

https://simplyhairaccessories.com/goody-girls-tiny-snap-hair-clips-16-pcs/

Work excellent for the Kiddos, due to them being used for newborns and toddlers! They're really tiny!

The link I posted above seems to have the best price and availability I've seen online. Etsy sellers usually only sell one pair, at almost the same cost as the pack above!

(8 pairs for $3.50! + S&H) Last time I ordered any, I bought 5 packs, they're fun to hand out to others!!

myfroggystuff on YouTube has a lot of diy guides, mostly aimed at Barbie and similar scale, but most of her methods and ideas could easily be scaled up to smartdoll size. She also has a few smartdoll videos and a blog with free printables for mini books and a lot more. Here's the blog: https://myfroggystuff.blogspot.com/p/printables.html
