What other types of things do you collect?

I'm curious! What other hobbies/collections do you partake in?

Myself I have a fairly large collection of GSC nendoroids & other scale figures. I also collect plushies and blind boxes!

What about you guys? Also bonus points for any pictures if you want to share!!

As somebody who's on the spectrum I've had a life long habit of collecting things.

I think it's gone from Plastic Dinosaurs > Lego -> Cacti > Computer Games > Lego > Dolls > Praying Mantises

Bonus crossover picture of when hobbies collide. This is one of the first pictures I took of my first doll Towa.

This cactus has an interesting history. I grew it from seed in 1989 and it's still alive. Or is it? It hasn't grown at all in a decade but I repotted it last week so maybe that will help things along. It's a Stetsonia Coryne and is the one cowboys usually crash into in horrible 🌵 related horse riding accidents. I would argue that there is no other plant on the planet that is this extraordinarily dangerous!!!

Oh boy so many (on the spectrum too lmao) but my most prominent ones has been:

  • Drawing
  • Collecting anime VHS and old cassettes
  • Collecting Digimon and YGO! cards
  • Collecting Retro consoles and games
  • Aquascaping and breeding shrimps
  • Assembling and painting garage kits
  • Home decor/renovation

I still do alot of these but right now my hyperfixation lays in dolls 🙃

Here's some of my art!

I. Collect. A. LOT!

-Aikatsu cards

-Pokemon cards

-Plushies

-Figures (prize figures, Figma/SH Figuarts, etc)

-Trying to get into magical girl toy collecting...???

-Merchandise of my all time favorite Love Live character

-Love Live and idol merch in general (?)

My other hobbies include cosplaying, live streaming, dancing, singing and Niconico medleys! (Give the latter a search online if you haven't already :) )

So I'm the odd man out here, and  don't have a bunch of anime-related merchandise. It's a great aesthetic, but there's endless amounts of it. But I do have a few Figmas, Revoltech, Figuarts, and Busou Shinkies in my...

  • Action Figures

Then there's also....

  • Transformers
  • Bionicle
  • Drawing
  • Machinima and game zone design
  • Singing / writing parodies
  • Roleplaying / Writing short stories
  • Some minor cosplay

Dolls have become my primary collecting hobby, but I don't like the term 'collector'. For one thing, I seldom buy all of anything. I feel no pressure to 'complete the set', only to get the figures I like. There is one(?) mint toy in my stuff. I bought a $300 Dragon Ball 2-pack once just to open it for one figure. @onion16@I would make a terrible example of the hobby communities as they're portrayed in interviews, with their pristine like-new collections sitting on perfect, clean shelves.

I've started to acquire nendoroids as they are a far cheaper way to have lil versions of my favorite characters than making custom BJDs of them- which I have also considered lol. I'm kind of obsessing over specific characters right now, and I actually plan on using secondhand parts to make a lil mini me to hang out with them... and I feel like photostory shenanigans would be fun. I'm actually surprised there doesn't seem to be a thread specifically for them on this forum that I can find... Unless you count the nendoroid doll thread but mine are probably going to be on their base bodies for the immediate future.

I also have a board full of enamel pins and acrylic charms I've collected of my faves... though there isn't a lot of room left and I may need to rearrange/rotate out some to make room for newer faves lol. Especially since the newer ones have a lot more merch due to being from a more popular anime... yeah basically collecting merchandise of my favorite characters has been my main interest for a bit now. It even has eclipsed my interest in the doll hobby, somewhat (I still want to do more with my dolls but I'm not sure when. That's why I've been pretty quiet on that front)

I would love to collect bionicle again but I don't have the space to display them and the ones I want are expensive now too... but it was a huge part of my childhood and I miss it.

I also want to do more cosplay, but I'm low on inspiration. Currently planning a modification to one of my existing ones, but there's haven't been new characters that really ignite the spark of inspiration in a bit now. Characters I *like* definitely exist but I don't necessarily want to dress up as them.

I also want to learn to make fursuit parts, but faux fur is expensive so I might have to spread it out so my funds stay... available for other things I like. But I made a cat tail for my most recent cosplay and I'm really proud of it actually!

Wait. Was this about collections specifically or general hobbies? On mobile and don't want to mess up my post by scrolling up as I've done before. Oh well, that's why the edit button exists...

Currently watching BNHA, 1-2 episodes behind on the anime rn and absolutely obsessed! (being in a fandom late has made dodging spoilers an issue tho :()

More into Nendoroids and my resin BJDs rn- including some BNHA character shells hehehe :)- my Smartdolls are boxed up at the moment but I'm still happy to talk dolls and doll plans!

I still have a tonne of stuff from my childhood. Towa thinks this owl is pretty neat 🦉.

I only have one Figma but Figma Miku is rocking YouTube so maybe I need more 😁.

Apart from the usual animation/game/movie/comic book/Figure/plush/model kit collection related to things...

Electronic music gear... although this perticular hobby has run into several obstacles, part hardware, and part life things...

But the bits and bobs make for nice photography subjects at least:

Spoiler

The one that kicked off the whole hobby, a Arturia KeyLab88 mark-I off a clearance sale:

electronics053

49889937073_ba3582c41e_b.jpg

electronics054

As Arturias flagship midicontroller back in the day this thing is addmittely too much keyboard for me, since its more suited to emulating grand pianos than trying to play simple synthisizer compositions due to the hammer mechanic keys... but I still like how its built.

Another discount special was a Behringer Wasp. a recreation of a brittish classic, of which I have absolutely no idea how to set up ... yet:

52711156654_df62957048_b.jpg

electronics062

The first actual drum machine I got along with the Was, and that was a Behriger RD-6, and before in the know ask... yes a Roland 606 is still out of my budget, plus getting to play ball with modern setups is its own thing.

52727084109_141f47b050_b.jpg

sabine032

The other actual drum machine that I have is something that I actually had to go dipping into ebay for, because it was discontinued before I got a chance to get it, and that was the first Arturia DrumBrute:

electronics067

electronics066

I know that the follow up DB-Impact is much better recieved by people who actually know what they are doing, but I still wanted an original partially for it trying to be original... but it still probably is good for some brutal drum & base shinenigans due to the main kick drum abilities.

No home setup wouldnt be complete without some kind of baseline close, and my choise was the Behringer RD-3, which infuriatingly follows its inspiration a bit too much as to emulating the sequencer from hell as Captain Pikant put it:

52721025967_b812a701b9_b.jpg

electronics072

I also have a Acid Yellow one, but to my frustration my DAW software doesent like two of the same items in a instrument list so I need to get a MIDI-box to be able to utilize both...

To continue with the cheap Behringer stuff, I also got a Crave, which infuriatingly has its own form factor that doesent go along with anything else in their line:

53279741971_052d2e0d2f_b.jpgelectronics081 by ~finnleo~, on Flickr

And in the place of Lead Synth at the moment would probably be my Arturia MiniBrute2:

electronics076

This thing is probably another example of too much synthesizer for my skill level, but at least it looks intimididating enough that sort of warrants keeping my distance from it....

oh well... apart from these, the main things on the shopping list if I am to continue with this side of things is another bigger mixer (Funny how 12-channels is actually only five instruments... which is a bit infuriating when you want to plug in seven things at the same time), and a MIDI control box at the very least ... After that I suppose get to look at other sound modules ... like a Korg Monologue, Behringer Pro-800 and Cat, and what not other sound boxes...

I collect pins and resin dolls as well! And I've been into more huge pins like 2-3 inches that cost at least $60, so I have to try to make decisions on whether to get pins, or focus on doll stuff hahaha.

I used to collect obscure Japanese liqueurs, but I’m not much of a drinker these days and don’t host parties much anymore, so the collection has shrunken considerably. Although I did pick up a mango wine recently that I’m excited to try 😃

I like to collect plushies, blind box figures, and keychains!

For non-collecting hobbies, I like video games, reading, learning languages, and crochet. I'm also trying to play music and write more too. I used to be really into drawing, but I don't have any art tablets and don't know how to use the programs, so I gave it up since I was unsatisfied with the look of just pencil sketches and I can't paint or do watercolor well. Since the electronic tablets are so common and high-tech now, I might try to find an older one for cheap and try to pick it up again.

Finally unpacked my humble glass insulator collection:

20231030_162835.jpg.2c5aca716e7d9bed2747af7ad2a2f9e2.jpg

These things used to sit on top of electric and telephone poles to keep the wires lifted up. Nowadays, ceramic is used for the same purpose because it's cheaper to make, so these float around mostly as collector's items. They're a fun thing to find at flea markets, and come in a surprising variety of colors, sizes, and shapes!

I wanna make a properly sized set of shelves for these eventually, but for now this thing I cobbled together out of a couple clearance wine racks displays them well enough. :)

Merchandise collector here, in the recent years primarily for the two guys my doll collection is build on, haha.

Other than Milgram I also have a lot of things from the Fate franchise and various other series that I had been into.

I do collect manga as well, even though I have tried to reduce the volumes I buy physically due to space being a limited resource.

This kind of thing can tie into doll collecting and styling. I looked at a lot of images from the old gyaru magazines when I was looking to get dekanails made for my Mio Akiyama.

The outfit styling information for different types of gyaru were useful too.

The difference between Dollfie Dreams and Heroin? Heroin is illegal, Dollfie Dreams probably should be.

“Empty wallets, full hearts.” That’s probably an apt description for the effects of DD addiction
