Favorite/Least favorite parts of the hobby?

Recommended Posts

Personally my favourite part is turning my ocs into something physical! I've always drawn my ocs, but theres something different about seeing your ocs in person, and being able to pose them and photograph them!

My least favourite parts are similar to what others here have said; staining, lack of space and scalping. 😭

My favorite part is probably the clothes. I've been lucky to get my hands on a couple of Volks sets and they're stunning. I love the quality and the details. The dolls are almost secondary at this point.  My resin girls are basically fashion models to show them off.

My least favorite part is the cost. Not just the upfront cost, but how every little thing adds up and accidental damages can get so expensive. I only have a head so far, but I had to find one with a faceup since I don't have the skills for it/not willing to send it out to an artist. I'm terrified of damaging it because it would get so expensive to fix. Either in failed attempts and art supplies or an upfront faceup cost.

My favorite aspect might have to be clothing! I love fashion so planning outfits for my dolls is very fun with each doll having their own personality and fashion sense to reflect it. I also love the quality and large sizes BJDs offer, When I first got my frightfully tall Clawdeen (17 inch doll) I loved the size but pretty disappointed in the quality, even for a mass produced toyline doll they really cut corners. My first BJD was a 1/3 Azone lilia and I was blown away by the quality and detail of her outfit and because of her size it was nice posing her as she didn't feel too fragile along with her joints being very well articulated.

Least favorite it might have to be scalping and FOMO(?) it's insane some of the prices being demanded for stained, damaged and incomplete dolls just because it's a Vocaloid Dollfie or a sought after sculpt Volks only produced once which in turn I feel generates FOMO since if you miss out on any release I hope you're down to drop AT LEAST 3x the price it was in the aftermarket. I think worst of all is we as a community kind of created this problem since people are paying these outrageous prices these scalpers will continue to charge these prices or whatever they can get away with (it's still their fault for being so greedy though they can get bent!). This is a issue with most collector hobbies but the prices in vinyl aftermarket are quite shocking to me honestly.

Staining also is a big stressor but it's something I accepted when picking vinyl over resin so my complaint regarding that is how some bigger companies that make doll clothes don't use non colour transfer materials or offer a stain test rating or just anything IDK...so my guy and girls have their skin suits on 24/7 since I don't really wanna play stain roulette anytime soon.

My favorite is definitely posing the dolls. I really love the feeling of moving the joints and adjusting the poses to try to get more 'natural' or 'organic' qualities in the poses.

Least favorite... Shoes. 😹 I love shopping for outfits and such but I always forget to buy shoes! One of my girls is just perpetually barefoot... But since she gets displayed high on a shelf, you can't see her feet anyway hahahaha!

Totally agreeing about posing being my favorite part too.  I love setting up a photoshoot, find a pose and bringing it all together.  Then there's just a magical moment when you're posing a doll and boom, she's just suddenly so there.  It's hard to explain.

Least favorite is THE WAITING!  This is not a hobby for impulsive/impatient people!  Everything takes time, nothing moves fast.  As a result, I'm excited about Halloween, but I'm already crafting and ordering for Christmas.

This happens a lot for me too, I'll just not have a shoe for a look so I'll shoot/pose around it.  *looks at Rapunzel* sometimes it's on purpose though.
