Upgrade Angel Philia / Classic OBI50/48 with GGR parts

Since Obitsu is now selling individual parts for their new GGR body, I wanted to try if the new wrist and ankle parts could be used on the old frame to add some extra degrees of freedom. The Obitsu website warns you about incompatibility with classic OBI50 hands and limited compatibility with classic feet, but nothing about the frame .- So I decided to give it a try.

Here are the new parts. - So far, there's two different hand poses available for the GGR.

 

Below is a comparison of hands and wrist connectors. From top to bottom: DDP, GGR, OBI50.

Indeed, the connector knob on the GGR is larger than on the classic version (probably to fit a sturdy swivel joint) and the hands are a tiny bit larger as well. There's no easy way to get the old OBI50 hands on the new connector. At least that saves you the trouble (money) to get new wrist joints for all your old hands...

The new hands are made from a softer vinyl (a little bit harder than DD hands), so they can be swapped out without too much trouble or the need for a hair dryer.

The GGR connector knob is smaller than the one for DDP but you can fit DDP hands on there just fine. Regular DD hands fit too, although they're a bit loose and look too big in my opinion. Unfortunately, the openings in the GGR hands are a bit too small to comfortably fit over the DDP connector. Otherwise that would've been a great source for some extra DDP hand poses...

 

The feet got a complete overhaul: OBI50 on the left, GGR on the right.

There's no screw anymore and the magnet bit is now directly attached to the skeleton. Below pic: GGR left, OBI50 right.

With the added bulk, the new ankle part won't fit into the old magnetic feet (unless you remove the magnet first). According to the Obitsu website, the old foot vinyl should still fit on the new ankles, but depending on the thickness of the vinyl there may still be some issues. There's also no word how/if they work with e.g. AP heel feet. (I don't have any, so unfortunately can't test it.)

The new ankle construction is hopefully a lot sturdier then the old version, since the OBI50 had a lot of issues with the retainer ring cracking.

 

So, now to put everything together. The connectors of the GGR parts fit perfectly fine onto the OBI50 skeleton and the spheres of the joints are also the same size, so they integrate well with the vinyl shell parts. The new joints even have a matte finish which better matches the vinyl, too!

The new joints are fairly stiff (not a bad thing) and the GGR vinyl parts are a tiny bit lighter in color (it's barely noticeable, though).

The magnetic feet are now a fair bit weaker (likely because of thicker vinyl at the bottom of the feet), but they still do a decent job of helping the doll stay upright. - At least, now you don't have to worry about a foot or leg remaining stuck to the base when you pick up the doll.

 

When attached, the new wrists look just like the old ones, and when you want to use any of the OBI50 hand poses you can effortlessly just switch out the connector.

 

I generally like the new foot shape, especially because it does away with the screw in the bottom. 

The gap between vinyl and joint looks a bit odd and I first thought that I hadn't attached it properly, but it indeed seems to be this way.

Maybe it's an updated version to counter the joint chewing into the vinyl, as reported here:

Although they appear to have the issue on the shin vinyl, not the foot.

 

I'm really happy with the upgrade, since it allows for much more natural posing and brings Ellie up to par with what's standard on almost all of my other dolls.

 

I hope this helps everyone who's on the fence about upgrading their OBI50/48 dolls with some GGR parts.

First of all thanks for the comprehensive review. 

 

Damn, I really wanted to buy some pairs of wrists to replace the current ones, but I don't want to buy all my APs hands again, I was hoping they were compatible... sigh

Oh man, I am so happy to see they upgraded the whole foot and ankle setup!  I can't tell you how many of those things I've had explode on me while doing nothing more than changing a sock or a shoe!  So friggin brittle!  I'll have to get some replacements for all of my girls that use an Obitsu body soon so we won't have broken ankle worries anymore.  Thanks for this info!

The AP hands might still be compatible since the vinyl is softer and thinner than the standard ob50 hand parts. But @Tierparkzone’s Ellie came with standard Obitsu hand parts instead of the AP ones, so he might not be able to check. If all else fails, I can check when I get a pair (but I’m waiting for them to be available in-store so I can buy them on discount…)

Indeed, I don't have AP hands. We can check if they fit, the next time my Ellie and your Alice meet.

But if you still need a hair dryer to get the AP hands comfortably onto the old OBI50 connectors, I'm not sure if they're going to work on the GGR wrist.

You don’t.

Looks like I need to upgrade my Ellie wrist and ankle too. Thank you for review and experimentations.
