Bonbon Galaxy Xiaohui

So back in April, I preordered Xiaohui, a doll from Bonbon Galaxy with a 1/3 head on a 1/6 body.

I bought her direct from their Taobao store in PVC (Mia Pink). It was also possible to order her in Mia White, or in resin in several different colours, but the PVC version was a fraction of the price of the resin version and came with six hand parts. At RMB 155 (≈ USD 21 or EUR 19), she was a steal!

And finally, after three months of waiting, she arrived in mid-July!

Apparently there were a lot of issues with this doll. Some people received dolls with malformed eye holes, black specks on the head, face and body, mismatched hands, and other defects. I was concerned mine would have these issues, which would be impossible to fix since I’m outside of China and didn’t use an agent, but in the end it was alright. Mine has a few small marks here and there, but nothing worth complaining about.

The thing I was most concerned about was the faceup—I got the official water decals, but I just knew I was going to screw them up… and I did. Had to order another set from the artist’s own Taobao store since Bonbon Galaxy no longer stocks them, which took another week to arrive.

These things caused me so much grief! First of all, they come on a blue sheet, and if you don’t wet them for long enough, bits of blue from the sheet attach to the decals and you have to scrape them off. Scraping them off means potentially crumpling the decal, and when it sticks to itself it’s nearly impossible to straighten out... Not to mention that they sometimes rip when positioning them 😭 

Of course, I had to make life difficult for myself by attempting to mix and match eyelashes and eyebrows from two different sheets. On the third attempt I was finally able to get everything into position. It wasn’t 100% perfect, but it was the best I could do.

Unfortunately, something else just HAD to go wrong. These decals apparently do not mesh well with Mr. Mark Softer, which caused silvering on her eyelashes. A lot of resources online will tell you it’s impossible to fix, or that you need to puncture the decals and cover them with all kinds of solvents, but thankfully a few coats of MSC fixed it. I’m not going to get into it, but the MSC also caused me a lot of grief.

Finally, after two weeks of trial and error and frustration-induced headaches, she is all ready to show off. Please meet Xiaohui (小惠)!

This is her current look, which I might change in the future.

The eyes are from Amatsuki Works. Despite the eyeholes being so big, 22-24mm eyes fit fine. The wig is from Borderline Toybox and is 8-9 inches, I believe. It was a bit of a tight fit, so 9-10 inches would probably be better. The shirt is a Kikipop shirt, but this is possibly the only article of Kikipop clothing that fits. Her arms are too thick and her body is too big to fit into most clothing of this size.

I also picked up her official clothing, but apparently it stains, so I’m gonna wait a while to see if I can find a stain suit for her. For now, she’s just gonna chill in this oversized shirt 😊

Oof, sounds like she's put you through a lot of great already, haha. She is very cute thoug! Also, for what it's worth, I think the decals look perfectly fine. 

Oh jeez ... I got the resin version and I sent the package from my superbuy warehouse yesterday, so I will probably receive it in the coming two weeks.

The complaints about spots and deformations are making me a bit nervous, superbuy didn't unwrap anything, so I had no way of checking for anything obvious. Was this just about the PVC version or the resin one as well?

I guess I just have to wait and hope that everything is alright with mine.

I think it was only the PVC version that had problems, but I stopped following the drama after I got mine. The complaints were on XHS/Rednote and I mostly saw them for the first couple of weeks after she released. Looking at the tag now, it’s mostly just people showing off their faceups. 

Her styling is so cute! I have the PVC version of this doll as well, in Mia White. I wanted to ask, have you found any shoes for her? I'm making my own clothes for mine but I wanted to find some pre-made shoes and I'm having a tough time because of her odd sizing. Too wide for most OB11, but too little for most YoSD size shoes too.

Thank you! I haven’t, unfortunately. Found out the hard way that YoSD shoes don’t fit. I have a pair that I got off Taobao that are supposed to fit YoSD but are too small to fit my TinyFoxes, so I’ve given them to Xiaohui. They look okay in photos and stay on with thick socks, but they aren’t a true fit for her.

But it’s exciting to meet other members that have her! I think there’s only three or four of us. Would love to see yours if you’re willing to share!

Sure! She's still looking a little wild as the wig is a WIP and is giving me some trouble, but I have her in some pajamas I made for her. And that's a shame. I looked on Rednote at Chinese users' outfits on this doll and it looks like most of them are also using oversized shoes. The nubby feet are adorable, but tough to shop for.

I too checked out Rednote after my last reply and found people recommending shoes for Labubu (I didn’t even know Labubu wore shoes??) and small 1/6 (小6分), which I had always thought was Barbie/Pureneemo-sized, but maybe not?? They’re super cheap, so I might pick up a pair to see how they fit.

Couple of tips for decals from an experienced modeller:

• I almost never bother with the recommended amount of time in the water, because it often is too short even for brand new decals.
• Instead of Mr. Mark Soft you can also use Microset and Microsol, which are less aggressive. Microset is applied first, and you float the decal on top of it, allowing adjustment (in most cases). Microsol goes on top, and softens the decal.
• If the decals are fragile, you can clearcoat them first, before removing them from the backing paper. The maker of Microset and -sol makes a special decal film for that, but usually I just use bottled Tamiya clear. The bad bit is that after that you have to precisely cut out the decal, and it may react less to softeners.

Anyway, she looks adorable.

The Labubu shoes turned out to be a good tip! I borrowed my niece's Lafufu to compare and the foot size is really similar. You just have to be sure they're shoes for the 15-17cm size version since there are also big ones. I bought from this listing which has a few other styles too. They're a nice snug fit and make it a little easier to get her to stand up too.

Good to know, and thanks for reporting back! Looks like they have a good selection. I even saw some crocs in the recommended section 😂 

The other week I also finally got around to style the wig for my boy.

Thanks for the tips about the shoes, because I was also running into the problem of them looking fine, but they definitely don't stay on, haha.

So cute! I want to learn to do more anime styled wigs too. I think I need to get some different product to get those kinds of neat spikes. Yours turned out great, especially in the bangs!
