ToHeart 2 Sasara 20th Anni. + DDdy 2.0

I'm so excited and happy they are rereleasing Sasara again especially on the DDdy 2.0 body, she is one of my unicorn grails!  I hope they fixed the issues with the legs falling off constantly because of their thickness as well as maybe more bust options. 🙏 Her new faceup is also suuuper cute, I love the new style of faceups they have for all of their newer dolls currently.

I really hope they fixed the issues with the legs falling off too, but if it still uses the same internal frame as the normal DD body I wonder how they would improve that. Her faceup is adorable!

I totally called it!

She's gorgeous. I should have known that they would re-release her as soon as I bought her head secondhand! I'll still try to get her, though, for the sake of having her as a fullset it my collection, and part with my current Sasara head if I bring this one home. She's simply too superb to ignore!

That outfit is just soooo kawaii 🥰.

Towa says we should get her for that amazing outfit then throw the Sasara away.

I'm so glad Sasara was one of the ones to win the best selection polls! I remember voting for her every chance I got. 

I really wanna hear the ones that voted for her for years about this "refreshing". This aint an original Volks character to do as they please. Sure the ToHeart2 people must've greenlighted the new looks but, why remake such an iconic doll to change her so much? 

Personally I think this was totally uncalled for given that Sasara's been the grailest grail for ages and this new one while cute doesn't look AT ALL like the character or the original doll for that matter even if they used the same mold, and clothes. Sasara isn't a  dreamy, gentle  pure character like they're portrayed her now.

Volks has come a long way from making dolls from eroge, and my guess would be her changes reflect that.

I quite like the refresh, personally. In fact, I'm rather surprised by the polarization I'm seeing over it! It's not a total overhaul with a new sculpt a la Natsuki/Moe 20th Anniversary, it's still very much the original sculpt. The illustration they used as inspiration is the same one they used for her White Gothic release, so it's not like the whole look is a massive departure from her previous iterations. This is a perfectly fine, serviceable update to Volks' more modern design sensibilities, in my opinion.

I will say, even with Sasara being the grailest of the grails to me, I've never actually played the To Heart 2 game/watched the various anime adaptations, and I'm sure this is true for at least some portion of people who wanted to see her re-released. I can see why TH2 fans might find this release disappointing, as it is a pretty far departure from Sasara the IP character (though I never thought DD Sasara particularly resembled VN Sasara to begin with). However, coming from the doll side of things, this version of her pretty strongly resembles a lot of my favorite customized Sasaras owned by other people. Given my track record, she is unlikely to stay "Sasara" in any meaningful capacity if I were to bring her home anyway, and would instead develop into her own character only loosely inspired by the aesthetics of her fullset.

TL;DR: My interest in Sasara as a doll is almost totally divorced from Sasara as a visual novel/eroge/anime character. I like this version of her!

GOD willing I’m so getting her. So excited to be able to have a 4th Sasara. Would it be a lottery? I hope not because I always lose those.

Re: Design

The thing with Sasara and her original character designer Kawata Hisashi is that the art style has changed a fair bit over the years as well.

Which to be fair isnt that far from what we are seeing on this most recent doll.

The box art for the gothic lolita refresh would probably be the most recent official sasara art style, since it and the outfit was a collab with Hisashi themselves.

They've recently re-activated on twitter oddly enough, but there'so only really sketches posted, so nothing refined to make full comparisons to.

buuuut... its still a bit of a lazy re-release, just changing the color of the outfit trims to brown from black, and the paintwork refresh.

Since we could have had, samurai Sasara from manaka de ikuno...

Or Valkyrie Sasara from dungeon travelers... although the last armored form is probably less known than the typical bikini non-armor...

 

 

For whatever reason the refreshed version just made me think more of Chii, from chobits, so I wouldnt be surprised if you see these with amber eyes and ear-pods.

personally not too thrilled about the unpainted deadspace between the eye holes and actual eyeliner paintwork again, so not for me.

Why bother then? I mean they went so far as to change the iris shape and made her SW.

Honestly I don't get it. Why would Volks make a re-release and change her up so much? Character origins aside, the doll itself became so iconic because of its intrinsic beauty.

The advantage now is that unlike with an exact rerelease the current value of the original will not collapse.

Also, it is unlikely that these changes were not discussed with the original IP owners - they would have the final say over anything, and apparently had different reasoning.

On the flip side, if someone was adament on getting the original faceup you are now still locked into aftermarket prices, without a chance at retail value, and sold manda prices are between 175 to 200k yen, so... yea... 

but only time will tell how the prices shift, though judging by manda history, the white gothic lolita was valued higher than the original, though cant blame that since the outfit is a lot better than what the DD2 one came with.

Also an original DD2 Sasara did sell nude with wig for 80k yen on manda some time ago, so prices seem to have downward pressure. no idea what the YJA prices are, because EU block.

 

I will say when Sasara was last out the yen higher in value so with the low value today the prices aren't as bad as they seem at least for foreigners. If living in Japan the inflation sucks. 

Anyway I had gotten Sasara for her first re-release but sadly had to sell her a few years back and was looking to re-aquire her, so this is a pleasant surprise even though I'd ordinarily be a bit jaded over re-releases. I think she looks gorgeous, and even the outfit has some nice improvements. Very excited about this upcoming Dolpa! Still hopefully next year will see more new dolls than endless re-releases. Like 5 dolls getting re-releases this year is a bit nuts when there are so many characters out there they should be making.

I've often had this thought as well, and I'm wondering if the seemingly endless re-releases are because it's easier to release dolls they already have/had the license for, rather than negotiate whole new licenses hence the vocaloid-fatigue 😭

Which is frustrating though ngl, like there's a whole catalogue of characters out there.

Well, these are the results of the Best Selection poll they did last year. Those were always gonna be re-releases since the whole point was to bring back an old release. It’s just weird they took so many liberties with Sasara when Kaede only got a new outfit. I guess they thought her faceup was outdated.

And I’m sure Sakura Miku, Meiko and Luka were super popular votes in the poll (I know I voted for Sakura Miku three times a day every day the entire time), and while they may not have won, Volks likely saw it was the perfect time to re-release them with the sale of the new 2.0 bodies. The stars just happened to align this year with the poll and the new bodies.

I’m still scratching my head at Frieren, though. I guess they didn’t expect her first release to be as popular as it was, and Fern’s release was the perfect time to give her a second run.

I'll be honest, I could not care less about ToHeart as a franchise (I have a distaste for eroges, though nothing wrong if other people like them!) but their doll designs are always a banger.

This is extremely exciting!! And for it to be a character from a different IP, maybe this gives hope for characters from older series' that they did?

Imagine a new and improved Tamaki, or a new Saber Lily... ❤️w❤️

To Be Fair; While To Heart's original 1997 PC Release was indeed an Eroge... it was Revised and Ported to the PS1 in 1999 as a clean Non-Ero VN.

In Fact; TH1 had proven itself so successful in that Form, that when To Heart 2 Debuted on the PS2 in 2004, it too was a Clean VN.

Granted; TH2 was later Re-Released on PC as "To Heart 2 X-RATED" but the Point is; the To Heart Franchise Really Was Something for Everyone...

and was really only Raunchy for those whom so happened to Prefer it to Be...
