Help on Idea!!

Hi, sorry im new to this... I don't collect dolls but some of these bjd and mjd blind boxes and regular boxes are so cute.. but anyway I was looking at some on KikaGoods just now but it got me thinking.. like idk what to get my bf for Christmas because he keeps saying he doesn't want anything, but seeing these dolls got me thinking if I could get one and customize it like Kurumi (I think from Date A Live, sorry if thats wrong I don't really remember where she's from but he likes her). I see that most of these dolls have like different face plates and stuff like that. Some even have like real hair. I was wondering if someone could help me because I'm not too experienced. I do want like guidance esp like the doll itself. I don't want it too expensive though. It doesn't matter if the hair is real/realistic or not, if its not though I do need the two pigtails, otherwise if its realistic type hair then I can probably try to style it! I do need help for sure on the eyes though because she has one red eye and one yellow. I'm not too concerned about the clothes though, I might try to make some but if you guys have any similar stuff then I'd appreciate that too c: thank u! 🫶

ouuuu my god, im so sorry I didn't realize this place was for like specific dolls and not mjd/bjd in general. I thought this was a general doll fandom site 🥹 

@celestialira don’t worry you posted in the right place!! What blind box dolls were you originally looking at? Because they are wonderful for customization!!

I know you said you didn’t want it to be too expensive so this is probably out of the question, but Azone actually released a doll of this character.

I was looking at the black purple pigtail girl from Electronic Pet Game bjd, and then Momotale mjd (the brown hair girly). 

For Electronic Pet Game, I see there's transparent eyes so I can customize them to be red and yellow! I just dont know how I would do that to be honest so I need some guidance there. I also can just spraypaint the hair black. Except I think the pigtails should be a little longer, I'm not sure if I can do that though. If you do know something I could do then please send your suggestions & help!

Momotale he doesn't like the eyes and from reviews on KikaGoods looks like they're printed/painted instead of a follow-eye, so I think I can take them off with acetone and draw them with pencil and I think acrylic? I seen people do that with monster high dolls on videos, but I'm not too familiar. I also think I can dye the hair black (I think you put dye in a water pot and let it sit there from what I've seen but please correct me if I'm wrong). Just style it with pigtails. Then sew clothes

Oooh yeah thank you! It is expensive though for me. I also don't want to just straight up buy something and call it a day yknow? I want to make this fun and special

That’s understandable. I think the easiest and most cost-effective thing to do would be to buy a blank head with planted hair from Azone and paint the eyes (or use water decals) and style the hair yourself, then pair it with either an Azone or Obitsu body. The doll would be 1/6 scale, so approximately 25-30cm tall (similar to Barbie, but usually a bit smaller).

OK, running through this point by point to help you.

1. You can buy blank eye chips for Electronic Pet Game and paint them the colors you want.  Kikagoods has a blank face with blank eye chips for $4US.

2.  Spraypaint is...not the best on this kind of plastic.  Acrylic paint would probably be better.  As for lengthening the pigtails: A lot of people use Apoxy Sculpt to add to plastic permanently.  Then you just sand it down to look nice, and paint it black.

3. Yes, watercolor pencils and thinned acrylic paints work very well with most vinyl dolls.  It's the same process as for Monster High.  You will need a spray varnish such as Mr Super Clear, and be VERY careful to only spray outdoors, using a P95 mask that is rated for organic vapors.  MSC can stay in your lungs and cause health problems and is only safe after it dries.

4. If you're dying a synthetic wig, you must must MUST use iDyePoly or Rit's synthetic dye.  The other kind will not stay in the hair.  It may actually be easier and cheaper to just buy a new doll wig in the size.  You may even find one with the pigtails you like!

 

Whichever choice you make, I hope you enjoy the process, and I'd love to see your doll when you're done!

Thank you! I brought electronic pet game so I'll be waiting for all the parts. Do you have any acrylic recommendations and how much water should I put in the acrylic? I'm not too familiar with acrylics since I never liked the crusty feel from it but I did know that LPS fandom for customs do use watered down acrylic, just unsure of how much water to acrylic and what brand of acrylic 😛 Thank you all for your help, I'll definitely update here if y'all want 😄

Hey guys! The doll has arrived, still waiting on the eyes though. I tried to go to Hobby Lobby for stuff but I'm not really a fan of the fabrics there and I couldn't find apoxy sculpt. I'll try Michael's soon but I'm not sure where else to to after now since Joann's closed would be so useful rn. But anyone recommend a decent acrylic and hows the water to acrylic ratio to make it not super crusty drying?

I use Golden acrylics, which I've picked up from Blick.  (Blick has a website, if there's not a store in your area.)  I use their blending and extending medium, which also thins things out a bit.

Go *slow* and use a tiny bit of paint for each layer.  That's the real secret to avoiding the "crusty" look.  Mixing in about half paint, half water or blending medium works for this.

 

Don't forget the Michaels website has a bigger variety than the stores!  That's where a lot of the knit fabrics from Joann ended up.

My favourite are Vallejo paints, all my work on dolls, hair or faceup work, is done with them. Their airbrush thinner works very well to get the right ratio, try to get a slightly "milky" consistency.

 

I Use TAMIYA COLOR Acrylic Hobby Colors on my Girls' Face-Up and Body Details.

 

X-17 PINK for the Lower Lip/Upper Lip,

and a Custom Blend of the X-17 PINK, X-7 RED and X-2 WHITE to make the Strawberry Red for the Inner Mouth Color.

X-2 WHITE is used for the Suggestion of Upper Teeth,

and all of this is Blended and Sealed in with a Final Coat of X-22 CLEAR
