Printing your own waterslide decals?

Recommended Posts

Have any of you tried it? Or had a printshop make some for you? I know it's more common to buy them and apply, but I was curious if anyone had made their own custom ones for their dolls. Specifically for eyelashes, not the iris but any experience is fine!

I like painting and customizing my dolls and practice makes perfect, but I'm more adept with digital painting. Also knowing both sides are perfectly matched will save me from staring at a freshly painted doll for 10 hours, just looking for a miniscule difference.

I'm also interested in this to put some tattoos on my doll. I haven't tried it yet unfortunately.
I'll let you know when I do try it :]

I did a large tattoo with home laser printed water slide decals.  It went on the doll's back and to really follow the contours of the sculpting it required the softening/fixative solution they make for the decals which did slightly damage/roughen the underlying vinyl.  The other issue I found was MSC sealant didn't like the decal or toner and became kind of a sticky mess.  Volks sealant did better.

Could you skip the solution?  Sure.  Especially for smaller decals or smoother areas like an arm or thigh tattoo.   Could you leave it unsealed?  Again sure, but they're fragile and won't hold up to much handling unsealed.

In the end it worked and I was happy with the result.  Keep in mind the decals are clear and most printers can't print white, so whites are out completely and lighter colors don't show up too well.
