littlebearries Posted May 14, 2011 I'm giving a go at doing Dollfie Dream faceups, and I was wondering what your preferences were on faceups? From what I've seen, DD faceups either are very stark, focusing mainly on the shape of the eye with very little shading, or they're all rosey and blushed and shaded (these are often the ones with white dots on their cheeks). Which type of faceup do you guys prefer? Or does it not really matter as long as it looks good?
scripple Posted May 14, 2011 I generally prefer the minimalist anime look. It's part of what I like about DDs. So the ones with lots of blush and lip color, etc. takes away from what i prefer. But really it's a matter of individual preference. Check out my new DollFun website. Share your own doll photos with free image hosting.
mitsuki Posted May 14, 2011 I like both. My preferences are more about the head mold. I love DDH-02 and DDH-01 girls.
Alphakitty Posted May 14, 2011 I like both. My preferences are more about the head mold. I love DDH-02 and DDH-01 girls. Those are my favorites too! Especially DDH-02, mostly because of my fondness for Soniko who is an 02. But with the right faceup, I think every mold can look great. Heck, I usually really dislike the 04 but I've seen a few custom ones that made me fall in love! DD Family: Mari, Saber Lily, Marisa, Soniko, Noumi, Kirino, Kuroneko, Sakura (DD Sakuno), Aerie, Akira, Kiki, Koko, Rose (DDS Mariko), Kureha, Ryoko, Lucy, Haruka, Rise, Extra & Alter! littlebearries Posted May 18, 2011 I need to try those two headmolds yet, thanks guys. I'm planning on trying some more minimalistic ones soon.

baldylox Posted May 18, 2011 I guess I also prefer the less is more deal on faceups. So far most of my girls are like that. Mamimi has the most eye makeup of all my girls tho. But I think it lends to her younger appearance. I do like blushing on cheeks as long as it's not overdone. Mai has some great ones as does Yoko. Subtle but detailed. Billy I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.
Suzuna Posted May 21, 2011 I like some blushing. No blushing just makes the whole girl look lifeless.
Milk Posted May 21, 2011 For me it really depends on the character the girl is trying to represent. Sometimes one certain style works, and sometimes not. But I do like it when the mainfocus are on the eyes. I don't like overly done lips or those white dots on blushed cheeks, though. home ‣ Victoria Beatrice {DD Beatrice} ▪ DD 2B ▪ DDB 9S ▪ Lavi {TF Murphy} ▪ Mocha {TF Fluffy} ▪ Anastasia {TF Ashley} ▪ TakoTako {TF Piercy} waiting for ‣ DDS Alisaie ▪ DDSB Alphinaud ▪ TinyFox Poison
Suzuna Posted May 22, 2011 Yeah, the white dots are overkill. Just a touch of pink on the lips with a bit of gloss is good for me!
Claudia Posted May 22, 2011 for me it depends on the head and idea. the white dots dont fitting to every character. same the colorfull or strong sharps. its a question of taste. some like it the dolls more collorless, more pale and dead, depressive looking touch like a robot. or very young childish i don´t like these look. i don´t like even these looking anime characters oder pale looking animes...... on these dolls white spots have nothing to do, same the blush or deep black wide eyelashes..... for theses dolls more pale colors are better. for me i like the more colorfull touch.....my characters are adults young adoults but ager over 18 not lile teh most between 12 and 16 ..... my girls ar colorfull... on some i gave them the shamereddisch face with withe spot on some i would not. the spot is for me a kind of being a shamed and sing of youngth. Just a touch of pink on the lips with a bit of gloss is good for me! White dots? Or, white cosmetic sparkles? My girl, Euphie, has some "white" or clear (transparent) cosmetic sparkles on her make-up, which I think is very neat. The sparkles shine in the color white, but the cosmetic sparkles themselves are clear or transparent. I like some blushing. No blushing just makes the whole girl look lifeless. I agree. The face needs at least some blushing. For a healthy look - The lips need to be blushed (how light or heavy depends on the artist). Optional (depends on the artist' preference, but I find myself to favor the followings): - blushes on the cheek and/or cheek bone - thinned-out gloss applied on the rim of the eyes - pure gloss applied on the lips (don't overdo it!) - real eyelashes I wonder how a Yuki Morikawa would look like with eyelashes and glossed lips... mitsuki Posted May 23, 2011 I think the white dots Suzuna mentioned are like this style: My Haruka (DD Yuki) has eyelashes but no gloss. I think she would look cute with glossy lips.
baldylox Posted May 23, 2011 Ahh, Hikaru's works! So very pretty! I also think your Haruka would be cute with glossy lips. Not that she isn't cute now. Billy I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.
Suzuna Posted May 23, 2011 Yes, those are the white dots. So overdone!
Halcyon Posted May 23, 2011 Ahh, Hikaru's works! So very pretty! I also think your Haruka would be cute with glossy lips. Not that she isn't cute now. Billy I also agree with baldylox - Haruka's fine the way she is. Yes, those are the white dots. So overdone! I think the white dots are fine as long as the lips isn't overly done. From what I have seen, these white dots are used more in a sense of the artist's signature than fashion. For example, if I see a white dot on each of the DD's cheek, I would know that the DD's face is done by Hikaru (not limited to Hikaru)? Picture #1 and #3 are fine. However, I think #2's lips is a little overdone --> thus, white dots shouldn't be used. It can be pretty easy to go overboard with the make-up if the artist decides to go with white dots, . PS: The SQ-Labs head molds are pretty well done. I might look into one for my fourth girl. Thanks for posting the pictures, Mitsuki. jadepixel Posted May 23, 2011 The little white dots appear on top of blush in a lot of moe-type illustrations, usually on cheeks but also on shoulders and occasionally knees. It makes about as much sense as blush-lines but seems to be more controversial. I'd recommend trying some face-up options that aren't available in the usual Volks characters - more extreme emotions, basically. There seems to be a hungry niche market there. jadepixel doll lab jadepixel eye shop
Suzuna Posted May 23, 2011 I guess I just don't like the white dots because what they're trying to represent is a gloss. Why not just put a dot of gloss?
Halcyon Posted May 23, 2011 I guess I just don't like the white dots because what they're trying to represent is a gloss. Why not just put a dot of gloss? I agree! As an artist, I would never use white dots to represent gloss. Well, I don't know Hikaru's intention behind the white dots, and I'm not even sure whether or not he's using the white dots as gloss, so I'm not going to judge his works. Kumi Posted May 23, 2011 I think, the white dots are "straight from the manga/anime", like here (SFW) - http://konachan.net/post/show/104953/maid-shirai_kuroko-to_aru_kagaku_no_railgun-to_aru On my local bjd community forum, some people liked the "blush with dots" so it's all up to personal preferences. I would go with gloss or maybe with lighter shade of fleshtone, but white is a bit too much for me.
littlebearries Posted May 31, 2011 I never knew there was such a white dot controversy!!! I put white dots on the first head I sold, and didn't put it on the second, because the first was the HDD-04 and super cutesy so it just felt like they fit, but the second was the HDD-03 and the white dots seemed inappropriate. I do have a question though, what are SQ-Labs ???? and is there a link to them somewhere?
Kumi Posted May 31, 2011 (edited) To her, to be precise. She's making custom DD heads from resin. For now, You can buy them on Y!J, mostly with eyes and faceup (sometimes blank ones are also available). But they tend to be quite expensive, on par with original Volks limited ones. 20-30000 JPY aren't uncommon... like here http://page4.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/d119175657 http://ameblo.jp/soukainoseiki http://www.figure.fm/profile/en/soukainoseiki/ http://openuser.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/user/soukainoseiki17 Edit. Zukin Posted June 25, 2011 I like both myself! I have to admit though, I'm very partial to the blushy-cheeks. They just look so darned cute that way!
