Making a Tsundere

Not so much a concept as I have already finished the project now XD But I wanted to share my first customisation story with you ^^

 

It all started when I watched the anime ‘Acchi Kocchi’. I fell in love with the main character, Tsumiki Miniwa.

 

 

I loved not only her visual appeal, but her personality as well. I said to Danny at the first episode “I want a dorrie like that!”. I felt this way throughout the whole series and even after it finished, the thought still often entered my mind, but it remained just a dream.

 

Then one day on my yahoo Japan searching, I came across a custom doll by one of my favourite artists. Right away, the expression seemed so familiar to me.

 

 

All of a sudden, having a doll with those type of eyes was possible and my thoughts about my custom doll went into overdrive. After months of planning and worrying, I caved in, brought the blank DD01 head in normal skin. I also brought some paints, pastels, sandpaper of multiple grades, an eye beveler and some needle files. I already had a can of Mr Super Clear sealant.

 

Before going straight to work on the head, I did a lot of doodling and mock ups. Now, I am no great artist, so these are very crappy doodles, but I’m posting them so you can see the process I went through.

 

 

I don’t have copies of every single doodle I did, many were on scraps of paper at work which never made it home, but you can get a rough idea of how I played with variation on her her, eye shape and face type. One day at work, I doodle again and this time, something just clicked and I knew I more or less had exactly what I wanted!

 

 

So, I got to work on the head. Sadly I don’t have full progress shots, but I’ll share what I did remember to take.

 

This was the head after I had carved out the eye holes to make a new shape, I also used the eye beveler on the inside to give my eyes a better fit to the new shape. I also completely sanded away that defined eyelid that the DD01 heads have. I completely sanded away the lips, then reshapes the nose, chin and jawline slightly. The lines you see below were my rough draft lines which I drew on after several sealant coatings. I drew the guidelines with a water colour pen so that I can easily tweak it without staining.

 

 

I painted on the upper and lower eyelashes, and also the eyebrows. I did the eyebrows with a watercolour pencil for a softer look and also because it gave me better control over the shape. In the end I decided to go for neutral eyebrows so her expression would be slightly softened.

 

I also added the blush, a Tsundere essential feature! I used pastels for the main blush circle, then I used a watercolour pencil to add in the blush lines for that extra animated look. More light layers of sealant have been applied throughout these stages.

 

 

I did paint on her lips. I did consider carving her a new mouth, but decided it was beyond my current level of modding ability and also I did not have the right tools for it. So I drew on the mouth.

 

This was her in a temporary wig.

 

 

And here she is with her proper hair!

 

 

Her name is Mai and she’s on an Obitsu 50 body, so she looks lovely and dainty next to my other girls, even compared to Melty who is a DDS. Mai is much smaller then anyone else, it’s adorable!

 

 

It was a lot of money and a lot of hard work to make her, but she is very special to me now and it’s so nice to have something made by your own two hands. I’m really proud of her, especially as she was my first full face up and my first reductive mod too! I captured the elements that I wanted from, Tsumiki and the custom Dollfie Dream on Yahoo Japan, without completely copying either character and she is just as I imagined!

 

Once she has her proper outfit sorted, I will get some better, non phone camera pictures of her. But for now, thanks for looking.

That was excellent work. You definitely captured the 'tsundere' style quite well. I love her eyes in the photo with the red wig, if don't mind what kind eyes are they and what size? They look like the ones galaxypolice uses in his customs.

They eyes are resin eyes from SQ Labs. They are ee - 05's.

 

They are pretty eyes but only show up that well if there is direct light on them. If there is no decent light source, like in the second picture with her pink hair, then they are very hard to photograph. I have some new eyes on the way for her because of this.

I liked how you showed the customization process. It is cool seeing something go from an idea to reality. I love her face-up.

I can't remember how much she went for in the end but it was waaaaay over my budget. I was going to bid on her, but when I confirmed my finances and decided what my maximum bid could be, she was already WAY over it! So I had to give up on owning her, I did save all pictures from the listing though and still frequently oggle her.

It's really nice to have a home made dorrie in the house, I'm waiting for her outfit to come but I can't wait to show her off in 'proper' photos!
