There's a slight advantage to being physically closer to where the servers are in terms of connection latency and load times. It's relatively small, but it exists... I play FFXIV and the small difference in latency between a US player and a JP player is easily felt in big battles. The US people will struggle to dodge things, while the JP people are effortlessly getting out of the way. That phenomenon is affectionately known as the "JP button." It's like the Konami code. I clicked on the buy button almost in time and the "shopping cart in preservation" pops up for 30 seconds follows by the next pop up which says "The item is sold out"!!!
