Changing eyes, and putty/glue...

I've watched a few videos on youtube about changing eyes. It seems straightforward enough, however one thing I am curious about, is people using different materials to stick the eyes in, whether hot glue or putty, or one video I saw used some silicone ear-plugs. I was wondering if there's any accepted "best" way to do it, and had also considered simply using blu-tack, as I have an unopened packet, and it's simple and easy to use.

 

I don't want to do something that may damage my girl, though. So I'm open to suggestions (or any confirmation that blu-tack would be fine, or is definitely bad).

Looking at pretty much all the Japanese modders who sell custom heads on YJA they use white sticky tack, it doesn't contain any oil thus it won't leave stains.

 

Regarding Volks own eye putty I found it terrible to deal with and threw it away after trying it once and went back to my trusty white sticky tack.

Hm, I haven't seen white, but may have to look for some. Having spent so much on my girl, though, I'm trying to cut costs and avoid buying stuff if it is not necessary!

Well, my thinking is... it will be inside the head, so doesn't matter if it does discolour slightly (though I'm not sure it would). I'm mostly curious if there's some potential issues of seeping through the eyes or something. I'll keep looking at different things, I suppose. Not like I actually have my girl yet, anyway, so simply browsing stuff about them somewhat satiates my impatience waiting for her to get here!

I use silicone ear-plugs for all my girls' eyes.

The only problem I have is that it's sometimes hard to get it to stick to the inside of the head.

Avoid any tak with oils, they WILL stain your doll. This applies to both resin and vinyl. The problem if it stains that it will get stuck on your fingers too and may stain any other part of the doll, since the oil isn't bound by the tak.

 

I'm using silicon putty myself and it's working fine. It's not expensive(at least not in my country). But white-tak are also commonly used.

 

I also know that some doll-companies sell putty that pretty much is a form of clay. This will go dry after a while and you'll have to replace it every now and then.

As I said, tack with oils in it are not good. The colour isn't really what matters(although here in Sweden the most common ones are white and grey hence the mention of people using white tack since the grey ones contain oils). But maybe your brand of blue-tack doesn't have that? Have you been using the same brand all the time or switched around?

Always the same brand just standard blue tack I know if a girl's eye falls into her head during delivery i can just pop up the road and grab some

I'm a huge fan of the white "doll eyes clay" from Cool Cat, which is oil-free, non-toxic, and non-reactive. It comes in a pack of four strips for $2.50, which is usually enough for 4-6 dolls. It's never stained a doll, never melted or hardened on me, never damaged eyes, and never left residue on my fingers. Plus, I've never had an eye fall out. I've used it on DDs and resin BJDs, with acrylic, glass, silicone, and urethane without a single problem (and I've used it on a bunch of other plastic / PVC toys, too, it's awesome for having toys "hold" things). Pretty much my perfect putty.

Generally for acrylic eyes like these girls have I now use silicone ear plugs, since I can get them down the road at Walmart. On my first two girls I used the Volks putty. One thing I have noticed about the silicone ear plugs is that they are easier to put in, but sometimes over time I will notice that an eye has slipped just a little a bit off center. The Volks putty is a pain to get it to work- it took me about 30 mins to finally get the eyes set, and it involved a lot of poking at it with a small instrument to get it to stick to both the doll eye and head. But I have not once had my girl Mitsuki's head open since I put her wig on, and her eyes have never moved with that stuff. So it's extremely temperamental, but it stays in place.

 

As for other types of eyes, I have an OT resin girl who has some eye gapping issues, so I use white tack on her to reduce the appearance of the gaps. The white tack matches the edges of the eyes, whereas with silicone it was more obvious since you can vaguely see through it.

 

And I help place eyes in my frend's resin dolls, and with them the problem is that glass eyes are very heavy. You have to use a decent bit of stuff to keep them in place, and sometimes silicone will work, but sometimes the eyes are too heavy and slip. White tack will work for them, but you have to use a decent amount on glass.

I used silicone ear plugs on all my resin dolls happily, and will probably continue doing that with any DDs I bring home. No problems, but I avoided using it with eyes also made from silicone since I heard it was a bad idea. I forgot what I used for those...I think it was Leekeworld eye putty, but I'm not sure. At any rate, the silicone ear plugs sound like they are also fine for DDs, especially since mostly acrylic eyes are used.

I use silicon ear plugs for the eyes as well. Work pretty since you can easily mold in the shape and it doesn't stain. The downside is that the eyes might move slightly due to external force, depending on how you place the silicone. It will take some trial and error. It is also fairly expensive here.

I bought a few and I'm pretty sold on it as well

I had been using the store brand silicone ear plugs, but recently found they are clouding part of the white of the acrylic eyes. There's no melting of the plastic part of the eye (as is sometimes seen with Super Sculpey), but there is a thin line of clouding where the putty ends, next to the iris.

 

Right now I am experimenting with the super sticky wax used to set porcelain doll eyes. It is a clearish wax that looks just like orthodontia wax (used on metal braces for teeth). It does leave a waxy residue on my fingers, but it comes off with a dry towel.

 

I have a packet of the UHU white tack, I keep meaning to try that.

 

One of my DD girls has the greenish eye putty DollZone sends in their dolls. It leaves no residue on my fingers and reminds me of a kneaded eraser. It seems to work really well. I just put it in last night, so I will watch it for staining.

 

It is SO much harder for me to set my DD's eyes than it is my resin doll eyes, because my resin dolls have actual eye sockets! Can anyone offer some tips for that?
