Hi! So after consulting several posts in here on modding (the nipples on the medium bust I have are going to be eliminated once I get some sand paper) I decided I should set up an account and ask some questions of my own as I venture into something that has been a long time coming. I first discovered BJD back in the early 2010s while in college. At the time, I found them beautiful and terrifying. The price! The maintenance! Oh my! I put the idea of ever owning one on a back shelf in my mind where it technically remains since I’ve currently gone the vinyl route instead. After finishing college, I moved to NYC and started work in accounting, doing my job and occasionally toying with the idea of getting a BJD but never committing. Finally, in 2019 I moved to Japan for a two year secondment and somehow in one of those how’d I end up here moments on YouTube, I ended up watching reviews of the sailor moon dollfies. While the list of intimidating factors was no smaller, something really drew me towards the design. I liked the slightly more anime look and style and as I dug around more I found the Miku dollfie which I fell in love with. I decided there would be no better time to try to buy her than when I was in Japan and so began my lurking on resale sights, trying to find one at a price that wasn’t too crazy. As fate would have it, after a few weeks of this I walked into the Dollyteria in Akiba and there in the case was an out of the box Miku with two small stains (one on an ear which I think was the bigger flaw), a missing panel for one of her sleeves and a slightly mussed wig for nearly half what the new in box listings I’d seen went for. I decided this would be my girl and armed with dream rescue, a lot of hair tools and craft supplies I went about dealing with the issues. The ear stain came off entirely. The hand one has lightened to be not noticeable and I’ve since grabbed some spare hands as well. I crafted two new keyboard panels for her sleeves that while not flawless, do the job. The wig remains the one sore spot and I may bite the bullet and buy a replacement as I’ve gathered this was a general complaint among first gen miku anyways but for now, it looks better after several hours of fiddling. My second girl is an in progress MDD whose head I got via lottery at the doll party this past weekend. It needs some sanding and such but I’m hoping when all is said and done I’ll have pics to share. And the third addition to my little doll family will be a DDB I craft this week at Doll Point in Akiba (yeah, definitely getting this all done at once, I know, but the planned vacations that I would have spent money on while I stayed in Japan all went away with corona so here we are and this will be the last one... for now) And so concludes my doll story. If you’ve made it this far, congrats lol For a little extra, I’ll be 30 this year O.O - can speak and read Japanese for the most part (passed JLPT N2 in December) and may also have re-developed a not so small BL manga habit since coming to Japan since now, no title is off limits due to needing translations haha.
Tierparkzone posted a topic in Doll Meet-ups & EventsTwo major doll fairs are scheduled to take place in Tokyo during March - Tokyo Doll Show 59 on March 15th and I-Doll 58 on March 29th. As you may have heard, there have been several confirmed cases of the Covid-19 virus in Japan and measures to avoid further spreading of the disease unsurprisingly affect the aforementioned doll fairs as well. At the current time both events are / I-Doll is still going to be held, however some major constraints are to be expected. If you are living or currently staying in Tokyo and were planning to go to one of those events, the following information might be useful. I'll keep it updated with anything new I come across. Also, feel free to chip in if any of you have some additional info, questions, etc. Tokyo Doll Show (March 15th) CANCELLED! - The event has been cancelled by the organizers. - All participants are requested to wear masks. - Several exhibitors already cancelled their participation. Some confirmed noteworthy cancellations are: Azone International (usually the biggest shop there - that's kinda like Volks not showing up at Dollpa) Obitsu Dollce Hobby Japan TcDoLL The newsletter I got from Azone this morning prompted me to write this post. Anyone who was planning on going - check the exhibitor list for stores you wanted to stop by and see if they are still participating - and maybe cross check with their websites as well. We'll probably see quite a few more cancellations over the next days. Sadly it's shaping up to be a fairly disappointing Doll Show, but the reasons are understandable. I-Doll (March 29th) CANCELLED! - The rescheduled event (May 6th) has now been cancelled. - An online event is scheduled to be held on March 29th where people are encouraged to post doll related stuff with the hashtag #エアアイドール (Air I-Doll) on social media. - All participants are required to wear masks. The organizers are planning to prepare some masks for people who have problems obtaining them beforehand. - Before entering, guests will have their temperature taken and may be denied entry in case of fever. - The venue will be ventilated by opening gates to the outside - dress accordingly - Current immigration/quarantine restrictions for travelers from China, South Korea and Iran may impact participation of international dealers. (TTYA comes to mind here - depending if they come over from Korea or have proxy staff in Japan.) Also while not in march, Dolls Party 43 is bound to be affected as well: Dolls Party (April 26th) CANCELLED! - Volks has decided to cancel the event. - The organizers (Volks) are planning to hold a poll for fans, to decide whether the fair should be held. The poll is supposed to go live some time after the period of self restraint for events has ended - which should be this Tuesday (March 10th). Thanks to @Monty for pointing me to this information. - The poll is currently up: https://ws.formzu.net/fgen/S4911908/ (running from March 16th until March 18th). For details, see @Monty's post below. The poll is likely to close on the 18th Japanese time - so depending on the time zone you're in it may close earlier than you expect. - The poll has ended. Let's hope the situation improves over the next weeks (not just in Japan) so people don't have to fear (or worse suffer) Covid-19 infection anymore. Stay healthy, everyone!
