Well, I was finally able to get enuff time together to do this comparison shoot! I know it took awhile but I think it was worth the wait.

 

I've got 3 bodies here to compare.... the original DDdy, a DD3 and Mirai. I tried to get a lot of pics of things that people have asked me about including specific shots of the bodies and heads so hopefully if you had those questions, I've answered them for you!

 

Now, on to the photos!

With that out of the way, let's meet our models. To the left we have Mari on the original DDdy body with the regular bust. In the center is Mirai on her default body with the default S-bust. And to the right we have Saber on a DD3 regular L-bust body.

The girls took off their shoes to show the differences in height. Mari is the shortest on the DDdy with Saber a close second to Mirai. Mirai is only barely taller than Saber is.

I hadn't noticed this before but the mouth area on Mirai is way flatter than most DD heads....

It's easy to see the height differences here by looking at the shoulders. Now with Mirai and Saber, the shoulders are higher on Mirai but the head size and necks make them almost even in height overall.

I took off their wigs so their hair wasn't blocking body pics. From the side you can see body lines and chest sizes.

You can see the back arches here nicely. The DDdy is close in shape to the SmartDoll body. Also, you can see how the arm shapes differ.... Mirai's arms are a little longer and thinner.

Speaking of arms, the double jointed elbows are almost identical on the SD and DD3.

The lower legs here look similar but have differences too. You can see the way the legs changed from the older DDdy body to the DD3, the slits are cut differently now.

Here's the lower backs and booty! Of course the DDdy butt is wider and more full than the others but Mirai has a nice little hiney too.

Now we need to swap busts for some L-bust comparisons. While we do that I'll show you the inner frame differences. As you can see, my Saber had her shoulder tubes break so I had to epoxy weld those back on and then do the zip tie fix to help hold them in place. So far this repair has held very well.

Here's a shot from the side where you see the torso cuts and different shapes of vinyl openings for the inner frames.

A little closer view of the shoulder tubes on each frame. At first I thought the Mirai tubes were kind of thin looking but now I see they're pretty beefy compared to the new DD3 versions. Plus the way they're attached gives you better positioning inside the body.

Now for the L-bust comparison someone asked about. To the left is Mirai and to the right is Saber.

As you can see, they're pretty close in shape and size overall. The position of the breasts on the torso is where the most difference can be seen. Mirai's breasts sit lower on the torso than the DD L-bust does.

The DD bust is a bit more round in shape than the SmartDoll too.

But since the Mirai boobs sit a little lower and are a bit wider, they look more natural in my opinion. This also makes them fit under clothes a bit more oddly than the DD ones do. I tried out a Volks dress set for the L-bust and the back zipper wouldn't go up all the way due to the breasts pushing out at the bottom of the front of the dress too much. A regular DD L-bust had no problem fitting in.

Mirai has hollow tubes for shoulder pegs while the DD3 has a channel cut in for pressure relief on the inner frame. But the pegs are almost the same size around.

So does this mean the Mirai arms will fit into the DD3 body? Well.... no. Here's a shot of them on Saber:

Problem is that they barely sit in there with any friction.... they're too small in diameter to hold themselves up at all. So this is a no go.

 

People have asked whether or not a DD head can fit onto the SmartDoll body so I figured I'd check it out and see. Here's a close up of the two different head pegs, Mirai to the left and Saber to the right. As you can see, the pegs are NOT the same shape or size.

BUT.... you CAN use some putty or tape around the neck peg in Mirai to make a DD head work. Here's Sabers head on the SmartDoll body.

And here's why this doesn't work without some modification... the neck holes are different sizes. And it looks like my Saber has a small crack/split on her neck hole...... no wonder her heads been a little loose. >_<

Now for some hand comparisons. The top one is from Mirai and the bottom is the DD3. It's clear that these will NOT swap out with each other.

As with most other things on Mirai, the pegs are smaller.

But they're also made better. The design seems more sturdy and less prone to breaking. I know that hook joint in the wrist of the DD has broken before and there's no fixing it once it does. I tried it when an MDD one broke and there was no saving it.

A quick shot of the feet with Mirai to the left and Saber to the right. The feet look very similar but the joint at the ankle is more visible on Mirai. I think this is due to having her extra joint easier to move and adjust tho.

Next up is legs. Seen here are the length differences between Mirai and the DD3.

Mirai's knees are a bit higher up. Also, her thighs don't have that weird in-cut like Sabers do.

I love this shot because it shows the big difference between the torsos and bust seam lines. Saber looks like she needs to eat a few more burgers while Mirai looks healthy and still trim. I like her tummy much more than the DD3 one, it's way more natural in shape. I also like the way the breasts sit with the seam line up high like on Mirai. So far this doesn't seem to affect her posability either.

Time for the DDdy comparisons! The DDdy is a little shorter than Mirai but not by a ton.

But those thighs on the DDdy! Way thicker..... not that it's a bad thing at all.

Tummy and boobs. I like the tummy on the DDdy better because it's closer to how Mirai looks. It has good shape to it without being skinny looking like the DD3.

The seam lines here are really similar. You can also see the size difference between the breasts.

People have said that Mirai's L-bust is between the Volks L-bust and the DDdy bust and that's about true. You can see the DDdy bust boobs are way more round than Mirai. And they sit higher on the torso than Mirais do.

But overall size is kind of similar.

From a top down view it's easier to see the size and shape difference. The DDdy is wider overall but Mirai's sit away from the torso further than the DDdy does. So they sit under shirts quite differently.

This brings us to clothing fitting. Here's a Volks top from the Alna Everday Wear set. It's specifically for the DDdy busts.

Now on Mirai it's a close fit but it's kinda loose too.

From the side. I had to pull the two halves together as far as I could to attach the Velcro strips and make sure the top didn't slip down her back. But it still fits her alright. Not perfect tho.

AHEM. Getting back on point, here's another DDdy setup. This is normally on Manami and her Peach Pai but it actually fits Mirai very nicely!

I think it works well because it's very stretchy and elastic so it fits her shape better.

For our last outfit, I chose the Gangster set from Volks. It's also DDdy only. And it kind of fits her.... barely.

See that top right button? It's holding on for dear life. Since her boobs sit lower on her chest, it makes the widest part of her breasts lower than a DDdy. So it puts more strain on the lower part of outfits like this. The DDdy boobs sit up higher so these buttons snap with no issues and sit under the breasts instead of in front of them like here.

 

Also, see the way the skirt is sitting on her? I couldn't adjust it any more than this. It's way too l oose on her hips, she just isn't as wide as the DDdy girls in that area so skirts and pants/shorts don't fit her as well from these.

Thanks for the detailed shoot. I'm surprised to see that I actually prefer Mirai in pretty much every way. Particularly the higher split torso, and I think the legs look nicer.

 

One thing I haven't seen yet... is Mirai's eyes. Are they replaced the same way as DD's? What size does she take? (I assume she takes the same size wigs as DDs?)

 

I really want one now, but only if I can fully customise her because I don't care about Mirai's character and just want the body to make someone else.

You're welcome! She certainly does have a nice looking body on her, the form and style is really good.

Her eyes are held in with blue tac, quite a large block of it. I'll take pics of it tomorrow and add them here. They swap out just like DD eyes too. As for the size, I'm pretty sure Danny said they're 22mm resins that come in her so you can swap them out for a similar size. She may even take 24mm eyes as the openings look to be able to use those.

 

And I'm sure her wig size is the same as a regular DD, 8-9 or so. Danny gives a size in cm or mm on his SmartDoll info page so you can check there if you want a specific size.

If you're after just the body then you'll be able to get that soon. Danny has already said he'll be selling just the frames and body shells so keep an eye open for those in the near future.

Great ccomparison as usual. One question I have is, how straight does she sit? Most of the pictures I've seen were of her standing. I'm curious, with the way her thighs are shaped, whether she sits straight like a DDIII, or if she leans slightly like a DDII or DDdyII.

Thanks! About her sitting, I didn't think about doing pics of that at all. I guess I need to update! So far she seems to sit well enuff but her jeans limit her posing while sitting since they're pretty tight. I've had mine standing behind a chair with Ryomou because there's no room on the couches and chairs. But I'll try and get some shots of her seated with a DD3 so you can see how they compare.

Oddly enough, I can help with a sitting photo!

 

Here's Mirai with Gabi (DDS Akira)

 

I took the photo on an angle, but you can tell that Akira's shoulder line is higher than Mirai's. Mirai might have been leaning back a little bit, but not too much.

 

 

Based on Billy's pics, my overall comment is that Mirai has a whole lotta leg going on!

i really love your comparisons they are such a great help. I like how the upper torso is done under the bust. It reminds me of the way some of my resin girls are sculpted and it makes the swimsuit look lovely on her.

Heh, I'll definitely try out the seated positions sometime this week when I get a chance. As for any snuggling, Saber isn't the snuggling type unless it's with Yoko. Saber is all about some Yoko, maybe since Yoko is her "master" and the one who summoned her. Otherwise, Saber shows zero interest in the other girls.

^^ Thank you so much for taking the time to make this comparison~ While I'm not 100% sure if I will want a Smart Doll head, I can definitely see myself getting the body when Danny has that available.

I think I like the overall shape of the smart doll a little more then the DD3 body. The area around the hips looks smoother and more natural. Having that stand hole seems like a plus too.

The two most beneficial and visually attractive part of the Mirai has to be the better bust design and the upper thigh. I coundnt stand the design of the dd3 where there was that annoying gap that curved up. Mirai will be next on my l list to get after Miku comes out and after Evoke Doll Kui since Mirai is still basically on backorder till late 2014.

Compared to the DD3 body, I kind of agree with you. But I still like the DDdy body the best. It was my first DD body and I love all the curves it has. Yeah, it might not be as perfect as Mirai or the DD3 in posing and style but I still love it best.

I agree with you on the bust and legs. The odd gap the DD3 has bugs me sometimes.... not always but some times. As for Mirai not being available til late 2014, you might want to keep up with Danny on Twitter because he's already said his next ordering period will be before the end of August. So if you're after Mirai, you won't have to wait too much longer to get one if you spot when he says preorders are going up.

I'm curious though, does Mirai have the same pose capability with her legs as the DD3? I had thought that was the reason for the thigh gap on the new DD bodies.

iirc Mirai's knees will only bend 90 degrees? I'm not sure what that would have to do with the thigh gap though

You're welcome! The only thing I've seen different on Mirai is her knees.... as Suzuna said, they are designed to only bend to 90 degrees. this does limit her ability to kneel or do the seiza position but Danny said he preferred the nicer look to the knees rather than the ability to move more and not look as good. So far it hasn't been an issue for me at all. And I'm not sure about the gap on the DD3 thighs or why it's there.

That's exactly what Danny showed at the presentation he gave at Anime Expo. He said what he was really after was... Then he showed a scene from Angelic Layer. haha My cousin was instantly sold on the Smart Doll project. It is an awesome vision. Computers are small enough that the robotic version can be like the ones in Chobits. That would be so cool!

I remember a certain someone on FFM doing the exact same thing when I first started this hobby and it made a really big impression on me. That someone was YOU Mitsuki. You've made a huge difference in many peoples DD lives and I would like to thank you for that. If not for you, I'm sure I wouldn't be where I am today.... broke but happy.

Wow, that's awesome! It *is* an awesome vision and I'm behind it 100%. I would LOVE to see something like Chobits or Angelic Layer be made real someday. All the better to have someone cool like Danny make it happen.
