Finding "Empty" Eyes

Recommended Posts

Yami Usagi

Recently I posted in the Character Concepts section about my second DD girl in the making, Kanade

You can read it if you'd like viewtopic.php?f=13&t=11253

, but I'll just summarize the part that is important. Kanade is not a lively girl. Her personality is reserved to the point of being emotionless, and she is comparable to Yuki Nagato or Tenshi. Kanade's design calls for blue eyes, so when the opportunity came, I picked out this lovely pair from Arietta:

I chose these eyes according to what I usually like, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized they might not be suitable for Kanade.

I worried that the eyes might be too full of life, and we all know that eyes are a very important part of expressing a girl's personality(or lack of)! So I tested them on Celeste!

*weeps* Oh they're beautiful! But it's nothing like what I want!

I figured that if the eyes fit my lifeless criteria, they'd make Celeste look that way, but she looks as lively as ever. In fact, the design is almost identical to the brown ones she already has.

Which means...they've got to go, and Kanade needs a new pair.

To find more suitable eyes, I decided to look at the sample faceups I've been saving. I found these faceups by lurking YJA, and all of them match the look I have in mind for Kanade. All are also the 09 head like what I intend for her.

I find that these all fulfill the "empty" look very well. I think that they are so successful because the eyes lack a focal point. When looking at the Arietta eyes, you are drawn right to the pupil, but these are void like and easy to get lost in which I like.

However now that I know what I am looking for, I'm stumped on just which eyes to settle on especially since I want Kanade to look disinterested, and not yandere.

I usually prefer non Volks eyes, but I've been looking at them to help make up my mind.

First is type I

animetic-eyes-i-type-dark-blue-ruri-kon-8.jpg

These have nice dark rings in the center like one of the above pairs, but I worry that there may be too many textures that take away from the empty look. They're also darn similar to the Arietta pair.

Then there's type K

kruri.jpg

I like these! They have rings with shades of blue and not too many highlights or textures.

Last is the new type M

4518992404240_1_1.jpg

These have tons of rings and almost no pupil, but is it too much?

So since I tend to over think things, and I don't have the funds to keep buying and testing eyes, I thought I'd see what you all think!

Do you understand the look that I am going for? Am I being too picky by not wanting the Arietta eyes?

Which of the listed pairs do you think works best? And do you know of any other "empty" eyes that may be a better fit?

If I do ultimately decide against the Ariettas, I would have to sell them, so if anyone has some eyes like what I am looking for, I can consider a trade. I can also sell them, but I'll post that in the marketplace(unless anyone wants to PM me before that >_>)

Thank you for your help!

First of all, I love your Celeste! I think her liveliness comes from her eyebrows and her wide open eyes.

I think the faceup may have a lot to do with how emotionless your Kanade will look. Dark eyeliner to make her eyes look hooded could do a lot to give her that quality. Lack of expression in the eyebrows will help too. And looking at the Volks eyes you showed, the M-type seems most emotionless to me, though a perky, cheerful faceup could change that very easily.

Good luck!

I agree with what galatia9 has said, face ups definitely affect how emotionless your girl will look -- eye shape also plays a part.

From all the examples you've listed, personally I only found the first YJA example and the volks type M to be the most 'empty' looking. I think you should keep an eye out for eyes without those eye shine/ white spots printed on the eyes -- or ones with smaller ones if possible. OR--- Depending on eye size, you could try angling the eye so that the eye shine is not visible/as visible?

I think I like the M type the most! They seem to convey the voidness that you described you're looking for, but they are not overdoing it to where it'd be kind of creepy. I read your other thread, and I don't think creepy is exactly what you are going for, right?

Thank you~

I'll keep that in mind. I plan to have her faceup commissioned since seeing how crazy I go over this one thing, it'd be terrible if I did the faceup myself XD.

The more I look at the other eyes, I think the "key" is not having white shine in the upper right corner.

I'll have to keep an eye out *unintended pun* for some like that.

Definitely no creepy! That'd be too...creepy XD

I want empty, but in a moe way I guess ^^'

Ow god my message got deleted four(!) times -___- so here is a shortened version:

SQLab has One empty type and One with an extremly small pupil, whick looks emotionless too.

http://www.sqlabdolls.com

Also Souldoll has beautiful empty eyes in all Kind of styles and lots of them are blue. I want to try them myself, but they're Not special animetic eyes, just normal ones. I don't know, if this is a Problem for you. As there Are tons of eyes, you have to scroll them yourself, but there are five styles I remembered, which I find quite fitting to your Description:

*pats back* Thanks for going through typing a response 4 times XD

Oh my gosh, those SQ lab eyes look perfect! And the Souldoll ones are neat too for a change of pace. But the biggest size both stores have is 22mm and I need 24

Still, thank you for the recommendations! It gives me hope that I can find what I'm looking for somewhere

And by the way, do you know the difference in effect of metallic and non metallic eyes? KK workshop has some in 24mm, but they're also non metallic

Sorry dear! I forgot, that there are dolls who need 24mm eyes I saw some in this size on eBay and Taobao. So maybe give it a try... And I heard from others about Twin Snow. I think this brand is making 24mm eyes. I could be wrong, though perhaps they make custom eyes on request... MAYBE! But I couldn't find a working Link for you.

My last idea is: use pupapa's D Eye Y eyes in 24mm and make a pattern which looks similiar to the SQLab eyes this should work too. http://pupapa.com/shop/index.php?cPath=27_71&sort=2a&page=2&osCsid=bc76e61fa1e19fe24a0c2b12d42bbe35

Good luck! :*

Don't worry about it. I didn't really emphasize that I need 24mm in the post. ^^'

Celeste's normal eyes are Twin Snow 24mm, and they would be my first choice, but Twin Snow unfortunately no longer exists. Just sort of disappeared.

Thanks! I'll continue my search~

All right, the Arietta eyes have been sold, so I definitely need a new pair now. I'm looking at Blue Rose Garden, but would like to know of any other stores that carry 24 mm blue eyes. Most perfect ones that I find only go up to 22. =_=

Why don't you work with Shelly from ersaflora? You can have them custom made precisely how you want and her prices are excellent.

Woohoo! I was going to commission Ersa Flora as suggested, but stumbled upon some Black Rock Shooter eyes from KK Workshop which are perfect!

I'll update Kana chan's in progress thread(and my signature >_>) when I get them.

Thank you all for helping me!
