Help figuring out the best body size?

Recommended Posts

Sakuramei

I had gotten a Puyoo doll second-hand a while back, but their face-up ended up being blank and I'm not really the best at doing face-ups (The legs are also a bit off due to some issues with the strings, but I was fine with that).

A friend then surprised me with a Puyoo Doll head with a lovely face-up to use instead. To the surprise of both of us though, the head is actually a lot bigger (I'm guessing the one I had was a Baby Kumako while this may be a normal-sized one?) and so it won't really fit/look right.

So, I'm trying to figure out what would be a good size body for the doll. Does anyone have a recommendation for a body (I figured obitsu would be easier, but I'll take any suggestions-- I've never actually had a separate head to put on a body before) for the head?

It's about 23 and a half CM.

I'm guessing the first one you got was a 1/6 size one (about 30cm tall), and the painted head is for the 1/4 size body (about 40cm tall)? At 23.5cm, the head is technically 1/3 size, but the 1/4 fat body is the largest size Puyoodoll makes. Have you tried actually putting the painted head on the body? You might find you like the bobble-headed look. The 3x6 look (a 1/3 head on a 1/6 body) is all the rage in China now.

If you don't like how it looks, you can look into getting a 1/4 size body. Kumako is specifically made to go with chubby 1/4 bodies (as opposed to slim bodies, which are more common), so look for 1/4 'fat' bodies. You can try hybriding the head with a slim body, but I'm not sure if it will look good.

The best thing to do would be to get a Kumako body, but they're expensive and hard to acquire. The easiest thing to do is probably to get an Imomodoll body. They're cheap and they sell a fat body that would suit her aesthetic, but Imomodoll bodies are made of vinyl and tend to have issues (see the Imomodoll mega thread for the specifics).

I haven't tried it yet (I've never removed this kind of head before so I was a bit nervous to try doing so and not liking it), but maybe I will at least give it a shot.

Thank you so much for all the information. I'll look into the Imomodoll mega thread and seeing if I can end up finding any Kumako bodies second hand.

Here is the head next to a Baby Kumako (not the one I planned to switch with). I had gotten where the initial plan was to just switch the face plates (I only realized after that the neck portion is frontal part-- not the back part):

(Also just ignore only one eye being in-- I ran out of stuff to get the other eye situated properly ;~; )

I hope it's okay if I post again to give an update ^^; Since I couldn't edit the post... Here it is next to the one I'll be switching with:

And so, I did give it a try and it does look pretty cute! The only issue now is... Well... The hook is a bit too small so the head can't stay on securely.

If anyone has suggestions for a bigger hook that could work, let me know! (I have no idea what I am going to do with the extra head now (the one with the purple eyes), but hopefully this will be all worked out soon then)

It should be possible to replace the hook with one in a larger size. I believe they’re called S-hooks, and you can find them on AliExpress for cheap. If the head is still too wobbly, you can add a plastic washer or two under the hook to increase friction.

If you want to expand your doll family and get a fitting body for each of the heads there are quite a few resin options out there that have pear shape bodies, that are a lot less expensive than Kumako.

I can recommend Guard Love, they have 1/6 as well as 1/4 scale bodies in that shape that can be used very well for such hybrids.

Thank you all so much for the advice :)

I'm happy to say that we were able to fit the bigger hook and she really does look super cute with the body, despite the bigger head. I might actually like the body with the bigger head more.

I need to get her a new wig of course since, well, the head was bigger than expected and eventually I'd like to get them some better fitting clothes, but I think they look pretty cute for the moment anyway.

I'm not sure if I'm going to keep the leftover head with the purple eyes just yet or not (as I do not have face-up skills among other things), but I'll definitely keep those bodies in mind for the future if I do (or just in case I need a body like these).

Thank you all again!!

Glad you like the 3x6 look! I have a soft spot for it myself too. Hope to see more of your girls once you get them styled to your liking.
