doolittle Posted May 24 Thought I'd make a quick intro post ( •̀ ω •́ )✧ I have a couple 1/6 Azone dolls from the ex cute series which I love, but I'm really interested in the customizability of a BJD. I've been interested in Dollfie for a while but none of the standard models really appeal to me so I'm currently getting materials together to practice doing face-ups! It's been a big learning process but I'm very excited.
Tierparkzone Posted May 24 Welcome to the forum! The small Azone Pureneemos are a perfect entry point into the hobby. I started out with a couple of Ex Cute and Alvastaria dolls, too. And I can understand that finding a good starter doll for 1/3 scale can be tricky in the beginning. Volks' selection of standard models is fairly limited, the character dolls are expensive and sometimes tricky to get a hold of, and putting a custom together can be intimidating. For me, that led to starting 1/3 scale with a Smart Doll. They had a pretty decent lineup back in the day and their Kanata's design was all that I could've asked for. Nowadays their selection is a lot more in flux, but if there's a design you like, it's at least another option to look at. If you're confident enough in your painting skills, then a custom faceup on a blank DD head is probably the most economical option. If you prefer not to do your own faceup, DollyTeria regularly lists second hand custom heads. The prices can range up to astronomical for popular artists, but there's usually a few nice heads for more reasonable prices (meaning cheaper than commissioning a head yourself). There's also waterslide decals for faceups available on the web and these can look pretty good. But it's an art in itself to apply these properly, too. Whatever you end up going with, I'm looking forward to seing your doll here on the forum once its completed. 1 Photo Story - Photo Thread - make your own signature like this
Neige Posted May 24 Welcome Doolittle! Like Tierparkzone says, it is a bit tricky to figure out things to make your first 1/3 scale doll, but take time, research, poke around and you will eventually find something you will like. Excited to see both your current collection and any new dollies soon!
Tasuke Posted May 24 (edited) Welcome!!! I Have Gone the Semi-Custom Route myself to get a Dollfie of my Queen-Bee Anime Waifu... Just as Close to my Ideal Vision of her as i Possibly Can. I've Actually had Tremendous Luck and Success with that Endeavor... with only a Surprising Minimum of careful and specific Paintwork applied. If You can get Reasonably Skilled in the Art of Hand Painting... The Possibilities will Indeed Open Up Wide; Spoiler - START - - FINISH - -Inspiration - Edited May 24 by Tasuke

fallingdolls Posted July 30 Welcome! I've only ever done a face up on my resin bjds but it was super fun and rewarding, especially if you get a blank head from the volks website! I also second Smart Doll too if you want to go the route, I'm eyeing a few and am trying to decide if I'll take the plunge and add one to my group of girls.
