Poofiemus Posted August 7, 2013 For those not in the loop, "Browncoat" refers to fans of the Joss Whedon show "Firefly", which is a sci-fi dramedy done in a Western style--think cowboys in space. So, I only just got into this show a few months ago, so I'm not too deep into the community yet. But seeing as I am most definitely digging the show (still have a couple episodes and "Serenity" to go though--been putting off watching them because then it'd be over XD), I figured I'd see if anyone else here was into the show or the community. I'm especially curious if anyone has been to one of the annual Browncoat Balls. Apparently AZ is hosting this year, and I'm thinking going, though I have very little idea what to expect. I think, however, that clothes-wise my DDs are better prepared for it than I am. In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser.
Galvatim Posted August 7, 2013 Never been to any of the cons, but I love Firefly! Great, great, show! I gave my extra copy to mitsuki a couple months ago, and she enjoyed it too. Gotta get her the DVD of Serenity sometime... Did you know there's a series of graphic novels, written by Whedon himself, set between the TV series and the movie? It helps to fill in some of the gaps, like Book leaving the crew, etc.
PrettyCranium Posted August 7, 2013 Love Firefly! I have to track down those comic books.
Ravendruid Posted August 7, 2013 SK and I have watched the series a couple years ago... all but the last episode, because, like Poofiemus, we didn't want it to end. Really need to get around to finishing it and watching Serenity, but have been binging on Doctor Who, a bit too much ATM. I have gone back and rewatched a few of the early episodes, though. I've never been to any 'cons at all, but the Browncoat Ball does sound like a lot of fun. There's a lot of great cosplay fodder in that series. I would love a few of kaylee's outfits for Yuriko, and I think Naiomi would look fantastic in some of Inara's dresses. HPotaku Posted August 8, 2013 Yes! I watched it when it was on air and am still mourning the loss of a great show. I've never been to a ball but I may have to now. I re-watch it every once in a while to refresh my memory. It's a wonderful show with great characters and I am sad they were not developed more even though it was continued in Serenity and comics. Misheru Posted August 8, 2013 Hmmmm, I like the show. Not quite sure if I qualify as a Browncoat (probably would) but I have cosplayed as Inara before (Hubby was Mal). ^^ But I am a Fillion fan. Poofiemus Posted August 10, 2013 Well, bought my ticket to the ball the other night, so I'll let you know how it goes when October rolls around. (I did ball-only though, rather than the whole weekend; apparently if you pay extra there's excursions to things like laser tag or a river cruise.) Never been to any of the cons, but I love Firefly! Righton! I think there's some unwritten rule that when you become a fan of anything, you must become contagious and infect at least two other people. XD I didn't know! I'll have to hunt them down then. Hopefully they're not too rare/expensive. SK and I have watched the series a couple years ago... all but the last episode, because, like Poofiemus, we didn't want it to end. I would love a few of kaylee's outfits for Yuriko, and I think Naiomi would look fantastic in some of Inara's dresses. Glad I'm not the only one with Finalie Procrastination, lol. Though I will say, there's really no such thing as too much Doctor Who. (That reminds me, if you like the Tenth Doctor, I found a really good DW x Firefly crossover fanfic, The Man With No Name.) Oh, absolutely. I think I'd love to see Naiomi rocking some of Inara's wardrobe! And I suppose a DD-ized Kaylee *would* make a pretty good minion for Agatha. . . damnit. Yes! I watched it when it was on air and am still mourning the loss of a great show. I've never been to a ball but I may have to now. I re-watch it every once in a while to refresh my memory. It's a wonderful show with great characters and I am sad they were not developed more even though it was continued in Serenity and comics. I had no clue the show existed back when it was airing, and on one hand I'm kind of bummed I wasn't "there" on the front lines, but on the other I'm glad that I went into the series *knowing* there'd only be one season to watch. Supposedly they'd planned for more, like five or six, but I'm not sure how true that is. I can certainly understand how it's totally re-watchable though. I think it's probably one of those where you notice something new every time. Hmmmm, I like the show. Not quite sure if I qualify as a Browncoat (probably would) but I have cosplayed as Inara before (Hubby was Mal). ^^ But I am a Fillion fan. Castle is my favorite. Oh awesome! You have pictures floating aroud? Yeah, actually it was getting into Castle that finally got me off my butt to give Firefly a shot. (Only a couple weeks after I started watching Castle, I found Firefly on DVD for like $20, remembered hearing it was good, and snagged it. Glad I did!) Fillion is a really great actor; I love that he can do both drama and comedy, even at the same time. Not every actor has the chops to pull that off. And I suppose a DD-ized Kaylee *would* make a pretty good minion for Agatha. . . damnit. And of course this conversation made me look up some of the dresses and found the one I know I would want to see Naiomi in would be Inara's shindig gown... I never really much understood about putting DD or resins in wedding dresses, but that gown sure makes it a lot more understandable. All that beading... Even without the beading, the cut of the dress would look stunning on Naiomi (especially if it was in a more sheer fabric and shades of lilac... ) I could totally see Rainie in Kaylee's normal clothes and Ringo in her shindig dress escorted by Eddie dressed up as Mal in his fancy clothes. Fillion is a really great actor; I love that he can do both drama and comedy, even at the same time. Not every actor has the chops to pull that off. Even on Twitter he is just as goofy. Granted he is a really excellent actor, but at least a small portion seems to be part of his natural personality. faustbane Posted August 12, 2013 Super jealous, I've always wanted to go to a shindig but there never seems to be any held on the east coast. Been a fan of the show for years though and still re-watch it from time to time.
Misheru Posted August 12, 2013 Tenth Doctor! That is actually my next cosplay. I was supposed to do this summer at our local con and was unable to go because of my back. But it will happen. Ravendruid Posted August 12, 2013 After reading this thread, we finally got around to watching the last episode and Serenity. That final episode... It wasn't even a decent season finale, let alone a series ender. Gah! Serenity, though, is absolutely very worth watching. I'm so glad we did. Thank you, Poffiemus, for bringing this back into the forefront of our queue. Daddy of: Yuriko, Sohi, Miku and SK's many kids
battrastard Posted August 14, 2013 Yep! Definitely a Brown Coat family here! Was extremely annoyed when Sci-Fi channel dropped the show, I hardly watch it anymore... But, that motivated me to get the entire season on disc and Serenity, too! Welcome, Poofie, to a whole new era! Edit: Any of you wonder what they've said when they cursed in chinese? Here's a good link from ToplessRobot: http://www.toplessrobot.com/2010/11/fireflys_15_best_uses_of_chinese_profanity.php (Also, if you google "firefly chinese curses" you get about 100k plus hits! ) "Madness takes it's toll, Please have exact change!" Eiko82 Posted August 17, 2013 *raises hand* I'm a Browncoat. I only knew of this show after it got cancelled but I still love it. Such a wonderful show with a great cast of characters. Poofiemus Posted October 31, 2013 Totally forgot to post here after the Ball! The shindig itself was AWESOME. A lot of people were saying: "It's like prom, but with people you *want* to hang out with." Was really neat to be all dressed up, and yet walk between tables to hear people talking not only about Firefly, but the upcoming Hobbit movie and other nerd stuff. Also, music was a live band, not a DJ. Started with a baroque ensemble, and some people got up and did English Country Dances, which are what the dances in "Shindig" are based off of. Later they switched to a Dixieland jazz band. Oh, and there was dinner, too. Fajitas, probably because we're in Arizona and it's sort of obligatory. Talking to other people, I really regretted not doing the whole weekend thing. There was a Battle of Serenity "re-enactment"--at the pool with Super Soakers and water pistols. Missed that, as well as the optional "tracks", which ranged from a crafts room to a lake cruise. If there's another Ball in the western half of the country in the next couple years, I'm so doing the whole thing. But still glad I went, even if it was just to the ball. Met some cool people, got a Tshirt, and bought Homura a hat: Even floating heads can have Halloween costumes! By the way, seems the tradition is to announce the location of the next year's ball at the ball itself. BCB 2014 is in Charlotte, NC, so those of you on the East Coast might want to look into it. EDIT: Here's the Flickr pool for this year's ball: http://www.flickr.com/groups/2381189@N22/ Didn't take any photos myself, as my dress had no pockets whatsoever and my camera does poorly in low light conditions. However, someone else did get a shot of me looking rather evil: Bet you didn't know villains ever wore white. In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser. TornChaos Posted November 2, 2013 BROWNCOATS!!! Poofiemus Posted July 24, 2014 Looks like we've got some Browncoat-related news to look forward to at SDCC! FIREFLY ONLINE IS FINALLY GEARING UP FOR BETA. We'll apparently be getting more concrete details at the panel this weekend, but one bit of news: Registration for accounts is open, and early registration apparently gets you an exclusive ship designed by the guy who designed the show's ships. So, that's pretty shiny. It sounds like the game is designed to be decently solo-able, which makes me happy. (That's what's keeping me from really wanting to try Wildstar.) Anybody else think this is exciting, or am I now a dork among dorks? I think I might even be okay with that, which is probably worrying. In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser. Ravendruid Posted July 24, 2014 This is the first I've heard of Firefly Online. I've tried not to pay too much attention to MMOs for a while, mostly due to the time sin nature of them, but also because I have trouble with games that require social interaction, but if this is going to be set up to allow solo play, I may be very interested. I have a few books from the pen-and-paper RPG but, again, the whole social thing makes that difficult for me. I think that, done well, the setting could easily lend itself well to a great MMO. There is plenty of room for exploration, with many places mentioned but barely given any description. Daddy of: Yuriko, Sohi, Miku and SK's many kids
needsmorelace Posted September 21, 2014 More Browncoats here! Plus there's a new series currently coming out (only single issues for now) plus a Shepard Book book that came out a year or so ago. And yes, this is another series that you just have to infect others with.
Screaming Angel Posted September 23, 2014 Oh me, me!! *Jumps up and down* I adore Firefly and I'm so jealous of all the amazing cons you guys get in America. I was lucky enough to get a ticket to have my photo taken with Summer Glau at Comicon this year. We kinda squeaked hello at eachother, had the photo taken and then I had to get out of the way hehe! I'm planning on making a Kaylee outfit for one of my dolls to match my bigger version.
SisterKyoya Posted April 7, 2015 This isn't exactly Firefly, but I just heard about it: Con Man A new comedy from Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion! There is 3 days left in the fundraising but they have already obliterated the initial funding they had asked for. Raven and I added our few dollars to the pot just because it looks really funny, something worthwhile to support, and, um... Yenna Posted April 25, 2015 Ohh, Firefly. I took forever to get to actually watching it, although everyone recommended it, because I knew it wouldn't finish properly. But when I finally did, boy, I re-watched it a few times almost right away. I'm a huge fan of Whedon's work -especially everything but his newest superhero stuff, because that just doesn't have the same kind of dialogue (some of it bores me to death, I'm sad to say). But Firefly...! It's definitely what I'd except from Whedon and I love love love everything about it. I'd never heard of these balls (not that I could attend anyway) or will ever be able to attend a con with any of the cast, because they just don't have them here. But I don't mind; I like to be a fan all alone and occasionally talk about the things I like with others -online of off. Would be awesome to visit any of these events some day, though.
