lordloss Posted October 21, 2013 To be honest, I actually hate most of the new school animes. They are usually cookie cutter stories which get popular for no reason, and too much involuntary fanservice, and pretty much no plot. Most of the main heroine in the harem tend to be mary sues. Not to mention the annoying giant eyed moe moe style is getting on my nerves these days since they look exactly the same. I tend to condemn these illustrators too. The exceptions of new school are Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Fate Stay Night, Hakuouki (Finally a good shoujo-esque series), Natsume Yuujinchou (A good slice of life.), Towa no Quon (Kinda avoids the cookie cutter, but characters aren't too powerful, but hey, it needs to be mentioned.), Code Geass and Tiger & Bunny. I tend to lean towards older stuff, like Cardcaptor Sakura, Cyborg 009, Armored Trooper Votoms and Magic Knight Rayearth. hmmm... i have had the time to put alot of thought into the whole subject lately, and (i think) i may have figured something out. i think just like with any art form, like music, and pop art and the like, anime is subject to periods of "idea saturation" that is to say that the current majority rule of intrested fans have ceartin things they expect and the room for orginallity in dwindling until a new "acceptible" set of axioms come into play. i blame "gate way drug animes" like naruto and DBZ. both in their own right fine and dandy, but they breed a demegraphic that lives off the expected stero types. they dont know how to handle Anime thats too "progressive" or too "japanese" with out some watering down in the editing and dubbing. it sort of leaves the artists with no elbow room with foreign audiencies. next thing you know were caught in a rut. im thankful that there are at least a few artists out there that hold true to delivering something well written, even at the expensve of "the norms" expected from their genres. man hard to have a detalied thought on this subject without sounding preachy... but par for the course. mind you this is all opinion on my part. but i agree a good deal with Aoibara. not of course to forget Poofs comments on diffrent tastes. its a very wide open topic really. there is no such thing as perfection. and i can only hope, with all my might that no such thing ever does exsist. kind of implies a limit to how amazing a person can be or something like that..... Anna-neko Posted October 24, 2013 (edited) Tthis has probly been said before (and most likely better too) - but every era has those terrible series made after a certain "IN" look, and the further away from the era we get, the more of the super-bad crap we forget, thus giving us that "well back in my day..." nostalgia. The only difference is NOW we have internet & streamings. In the 90s someone had to fansub it and copy to VHS, so a lot of the worst series just never reached you For example, we all can say Cowboy Bebop came from the 90s and was fantastic! As was Utena. and SailorMoon (tho upon rewatching it, certain parts are far more cheesy than I've remembered... then again, I'm not 14 anymore, so thats to be expected. The central theme & mesg still hold up!) but nobody will remember that the 90s also gave us terribly designed or half the time animated off-model things such as Saber Marionette OAVs (roughly half of the main show itself suffers from this), Galaxy Angel, Cyber Team in Akihabara, Dragon Pink (thats right, I went there) They were ALL that era's moe-blobs de jour, and yet we lived thru it. Which in turn inspired plenty of derivatives straight into 2000s such as Tokyo Mew Mew or all the many formulaic harems a la Love Hina but modern anime has plenty of bad and good just the same. For all the pain of moeblobs (sorry KyoAni, you guys need new chara designers!) there's been Haibane Renmei, Kino's Journey, Kamisama Kiss (it was just short enuff to not outstay the welcome), Durarara, Sword Art Online (sorry, but only 1st half. Lets pretend Fairy Dance didn't happen,k?).... so...yeah..... New School and Old School both have nearly same strengths & weaknesses. The only difference is now I can preview stuff quicker on the interwebz before shelling out all the cash for the lovely DVD boxsets a few months later Edited October 24, 2013 by Guest

Anythya Posted October 28, 2013 i dont mind some of the new anime bt its true that most seem to be the same and even down to same drawn characters just with different names, dont get me wrong, im a sucker for all of them but i really enjoy my old anime. Astro boy was my very first love, and leo the white lion, sailor moon, old school final fantasy, bubblegum crisis, ghost in the shell, pokemon (original lol) dragon ball z etc etc. im not a fan at all of any "anime" that comes out of america, i think its not as great but of all the things that i dont like, nothing is as bad as when they take an old original anime and redo it....that ALWAYS turns out bad, i cannot stand the newer Astroboy, i think they have ruined it, i dont know maybe it just me but i really am not fond of remakes like that, how can you "improve" on something that was already amazing??? Now, now, let's not go hatin' on Love Hina Maybe I'm a bit biased by the fact that Love Hina was the very anime that got me into this whole anime thing. I've always felt that, even though one could perhaps classify Love Hina as a Harem Anime, it's quite different compared to more recent atempts at creating harem animes, both story, art and character wise. Most likely since it mainly focuses on the relation between Keitaro and Naru with the rest of the girls being mainly a side cast. I kind of feel that more recent harem animes usually has one male protagonist with the girls being, for the lack of a better word, "pleasure fodder". Love Hina's the only harem-ish anime I've watched that has left a lasting impression. Love Hina's the only harem-ish anime I've watched that has left a lasting impression. well, Love Hina for a lot of people is their 1st harem, so it tends to stick (my first was a reverse harem with Fushigi Yuugi. Miaka may have been a ditz, but her bishies entourage was so sweet) Tho its kinda funny 'cause soooo many 90s kids watched lots and lots of harems (Ranma, Tenchi Muyo, FY), but once the supernatural element was removed, only then did it register what that trope was!
