How do you feel about (straight) female collectors?

Recommended Posts

SakuraDreams
Sometimes I have felt like maybe this isn't the hobby for me, because so many things seem to be targeted towards males and are much sexier than where my tastes and interests lie... But then I stop thinking about it. I like these dolls, I never really liked the resin dolls. I like the "anime" look to them, how it's 2D (or sometimes 3D) characters brought to life.

A lot of people that I have encountered in this hobby like to make their dolls a lot sexier than I ever would, and I really like how they style their girls. Many of them are really pretty and well photographed! It's just not for me, but it's not something I would hold against them or want to argue with them about. ^__^

I live in a small town outside of New Orleans, and this is a very religious area/city in general... But sometimes I feel like family friends are quietly judging me because I am a female that has dolls with large busts and short skirts. I feel like they are instantly assuming I am a lesbian, when really it's just so many people where I live are just exceedingly closed minded.

Hmmm. Don't worry. Maybe just drop the occasional hint to those you care about that "no, these are not sex dolls", but Japanese simply only make dollfies like these .... Not everything with a mini skirt is vulgar. Etc.

The company which makes them is not some sex toy company etc.

Sometimes being silently judged or having trouble finding clothes I like can be really frustrating, but I still love these dolls and I'll always be more than happy to say I own them--- even as a straight female collector. ;D

I'm glad that you understood what I was saying in my post~ ^-^

Thank you

Your three DDs in your sig are really gorgeous. I can't imagine anyone thinking these girls are weird in any way. They're like fashion dolls dressed really well.

At home: DD Sakura Shinguji, DDS Yukiho Hagiwara, DD Asuna, DD Rina Ogata, DDS MOMO, DDS Ranko Kanzaki.

Waiting for: Hatsune Miku

Preordered: Ranka Lee

Countdown to Hatsune Miku.

I sincerely don't think dollfie dreams are targeted at 'men'. I'd say the yamato vmf dolls are targeted at men. There's a huge difference in the style of clothes and facial expressions released for both. I think the reason why some people might have gotten offended at your initial post is because you state it's targeted at men as if it were a fact, not an opinion

I'm a straight female and I've been in male hobbies a huge chunk of my life. Some of the things I collect ARE targeted men, example, my sexy anime girl figurines. I'm well aware of that. Really don't feel that way about DD. I have a lot of resin boys, but i have a few resin girls. I felt the lovelydoll body was more oriented towards men.

Haha welcome to the foray d4rk 0rchyd, your first post on a controversial topic.....but I've got to

agree with you^^

I don't own a DD now but have recently a lovely friend of mine owns her now, I do own more than

10 VMF50/Angel Philia girls and I can absolutely see why you would say that. Tommy the main

person behind above mentioned has marketed them this way and that's the how they are now

perceived but when you get past the "image" they are cute and mischievous girls when dressed

appropriately and yes it's easy to get Pervy items for them but so much harder to get normal

garments

Back on topic I personally think that that DD's are not gender spefic they are way to cute and

innocent with they're lovely smiles^^ maybe they are more female specific than we think

Actually it *IS* a fact that Volks Dollfie Dreams ARE targeted to men specifically. But Volks is a Japanese company and their main market is Japan, where the otaku community is their main fan and customer base for the DD's. For a while there, almost every DD coming out from them was a character from an eroge game or manga series. Elsewhere in the world, DD's don't seem to be targeted towards men specifically, it's about a 50/50 split from what I've seen in the US and Canada.

So originally, DD's were in fact targeted directly to the male collector community in Japan.

As for the VMF50 girls, those are definitely geared towards the male customer base. That company knows what it's customers want and it gives it to them in spades.

I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.

Thank you everyone for the thoughtful replies ^^

My experience visiting Volks store in Akihabara was of feeling very uncomfortable, knowing that me just quietly being there was bothering other companies. It's nice to see that attitudes in the Western community are totally opposite to those in Japan in terms of gender stereotyping >_<

Yeah I think we also had very different times! When I went, a worker escorted me around the store, carefully pointing out new items, sales, etc- showed me the second hand items and helped me get a few pair of DD eyes out- then got a map of akibahara and highlighted all the other stores on the map that might sell doll things for me. It was so sweet-- and that is as a female as well. Otherwise I was mostly ignored (went to 3 other volks stores in Japan)- yet in Seoul it was very opposite. I found that male forum member RedLion was treated very nice, the pair of us got attention unlike any other time I was in the store. When I was with him, they were friendly and cordial and full of compliments, but when I was there alone sometimes... they were just a bit rude... I bought a Mayu in Korea, I was there about 2-3 times a month, but they always came off so patronizing, like I didn't know what I was doing. When I was buying my Mayu, I wanted an MSD outfit as well for my resin girl, and they just kept saying "DD, won't fit!" and I kept nodding, and "yes," and "I know," and "it's okay." and the girl I had was just frustrated with me. A couple times I would get girls who would act like I had no idea what I was doing, buying an option head "you need to paint this!! you know?? does not have face paint!!" um... "22mm!! you need 22mm?? did you check??" girl this is my third time here this month I'm pretty sure I checked what size eyes I needed.

@OP: You say DDs were meant for males but I feel like it's a female dominated hobby. xD

And I have absolutely no problem with that at all because it just makes more sense to me that females collect DDs. I'm male but I feel like the outlier. All the friends I've meet in this hobby are girls and they don't even mind that I'm male because they are more happy about being able to talk about DDs and their clothes with me.

I'm a straight female and the only time it gets a little awkward is when I'm trying to introduce this hobby to others (especially non-anime fans) and like every other picture that pops up is of a 'sexy' doll or scantily clothed doll. I personally don't mind seeing these as I like the Sexy outfits too but I just don't want people to think that I'm into the wrong kind of dolls or do strange things with them.

...but...I'd like DDs better if their busts didn't have nipples though...I feel like that was geared towards guys and is a little unnecessary. lol I'm too afraid too try and sand the nipples off. ;-;

I think the nipples on S-bust and m-bust are fine but bigger than that they do look rather pervy. But, nipples are the norm for BJDs in general, not just DDs.

You make a good point. I guess S and SS bust girls would look strange without nipples. haha. I just hate that they are usually the first thing people point out when they see BJDs for the first time. ah well.

I'm super new to Dollfie Dreams, but I've been in the ABJD hobby collecting dolls of the resin variety for almost seven years now. I have to admit, it didn't occur to me right at first that DDs were marketed mostly for men in Asia, but when I got to looking at the Volks site and seeing all the pieces parts and all those HUGE racks, it kind of slapped me in the face and I was like "OH! Oh, haha I get it!". XD

It doesn't put me off of them at all, though; if anything, I think it's nice that there are dolls that aren't action figures marketed towards men, allowing men and women alike to share in the same hobby ^__^ Coming from DoA, where the majority of the membership is female, it makes for a novel change to be sure.

I DO wish that they would make male Dollfie Dreams, though! I mean, they've got to realize that their customer base has expanded far beyond just males these days. I mean, all they have to do is look at the Super Dollfie sales and realize how many women are buying THOSE, and I know their male dolls always sell well. I'm sure there's lots of people that would love a vinyl DD boyfriend or brother for their DD ladies!

I always thought it was mainly women who collected these dolls haha.

One of my best friends runs a website devoted to japanese eroge. He absolutely adores all things cute and moe. He loves imoutos and loli's but he is absolutely freaked out by dolls.

I am a straight female and I absolutely love them. I love looking at pictures of even the more scantily clad ones, perhaps because I cant wear such bold clothing myself XD
