I would love to see the props y'all have made, and what your favorite projects (ongoing or finished) have been! I know it's silly, but I'm so fascinated by the props and accessories y'all have made!

Somehow this topic flew under my radar until now, so let's get it going a bit.

It's always fun and easy to make stuff from polymer clay. The Daiso one is cheap and (once dry) doesn't appear to stain either. Just be aware that it'll shrink a bit while drying.
I've made these matsuri foods, including dango, chocolate bananas and candy apples:

I've also used the clay to make doll sized ice cream that has featured on several banners before.

And then of course, there's the lightsabers. They're a pain to make, but the result is really cool indeed:

I had been wondering about that! Because I love the idea of trying to custom make her things, but I don't want stains or flake-y clay to get on her!

What specific type of clay do you recommend? A polymer clay or that super soft stuff they always have? Any paint recommendations would also be appreciated if you used paints or anything! I just wanna make sure my girl is getting the best (even if it's on a budget) :3

(Also holy shit your clay work is REALLY good!! The few times I've tried it's come out all lumpy, so that's all super impressive looking to me!)

I've always used the one that comes packaged like an oversized gum stick (reference link).

But to my shock, it seems they're phasing out that specific clay? It appears this is the replacement. - The ingredients appear to be mostly the same, but it looks a lot more porous in the product photos. I guess, I'll have to stop by my local Daiso later today and have a look at it in person.

Me with a paintbrush is a disaster waiting to happen. That's why I tend to avoid liquid paints when possible.

I did the burn marks on the yakidango with some of the Volks pastel paints I had lying around from another project.

For the candy layer of the apples in the photos, I used Daiso UV resin. Unfortunately, I didn't let the apples dry enough before applying the resin, so they eventually shrunk and peeled away from the inside of the resin layer, making them look extremely unsightly. Eventually, I made a second batch of apples and let them dry for about two weeks to make sure I got all the shrinkage out of the way. That time I used clear glossy varnish for the candy layer. It's slower to cure than UV resin, but it doesn't need to be treated with UV light from all around, so you can just let it sit.

If you're worried about the clay potentially staining after all, you could (after drying) coat it with a layer of MSC. I did that with the dango (to seal the pastels) and the bananas (because I made them at the same time). I didn't bother with MSC for the ice cream, but never had staining issues there.

Oh it's so weird that they're changing it.. Seems like the first one is a polymer clay though, which shouldn't be too hard to find somewhere else worst case!

Ohh okay! I hadn't thought of that. I've never been great with trying to get resin to cooperate, and I've never tried pastel paints, but you've gotta start somewhere to get good! So maybe I'll pick some up next time I get paid!

... What's MSC? Google was not helpful LOL

Sorry that I didn't elaborate on that. MSC is commonly used as a shorthand for Mr. Super Clear, a clear sealant spray. There should be plenty of advice on how to use it floating around on the forum, should you need it.

Gotcha! I'll have to do some research then >:3!

Hopefully I'll also be able to stop by Daiso sometime soon to grab some clay!
