LOL... modern media. The actual Annabelle doll isn't an uncanny valley porcelain doll; she's a Raggedy Ann! Probably the most soft and non-threatening looking doll you could come across. (Or maybe the movie would have been scarier if they'd actually managed to make a soft rag doll scary)

No creepy comments besides my bf saying "nasty'' things about my DDdys large breasts. ROFL.

My dolls generally don't go out in public, but sometimes I'll have one sitting in public areas of my house (I live in a house of 3 friends + my husband). Occasionally I get the comment from housemates/guests that the dolls are creepy, but they aren't like, actively repulsed by them; they just say it and move on. My husband only finds one doll creepy and its a resin fashion doll that's highly articulated and also has really detailed musculature. I of course think all my dolls are lovely, but I can see why that level of detail could put someone off, even someone like him who's been around my hobby for years.

It's not a "creepy" experience as such, but "weird".

The few times i went out with my dolls, I was with a cousin with some experience on taking pictures, so he could help me. Those sessions were (and still will be) fun. For now, people just looked at us, but never said anything. My cousin, instead, said my dolls were like "mini sex dolls". I understand a little bit why he tought that and on one hand I can't blame him. The "erotic pictures" are part of the hobby as well and, personally, I think that's not bad at all. There are a lot who enjoy doing that. Problem is, he said, and keep saying that dolls shouldn't be made with curvy bodies because its not "healthy" for the owner's sanity. I don't know about that, and I don't do erotic photos either, but his comments makes me think I'm some kind of weirdo to him and that's what bothers me. But well, even if I try to make him understand, there are a lot of people out there closeminded that love to do a simple thing, a topic unnecesarily complicated. And besides, he still helps me taking pictures and never complained about that, so I don't care anymore haha.

I took my doll out to class with me once for a whole day. I got several comments on how creepy she was, but one person did kind of recognize her as "one of the japanese dolls". I don't get how people can find Stephani creepy (unless they have a phobia). She's a cute anime girl with big tiddies. How is that creepy? 🤣

I've never really understood this. I know a woman who likes anime, and likes anime figures, but thinks all dolls are creepy. She's says it's the realistic looking hair and eyes.

The difference between Dollfie Dreams and Heroin? Heroin is illegal, Dollfie Dreams probably should be.

“Empty wallets, full hearts.” That’s probably an apt description for the effects of DD addiction

I can totally understand that. I don't think most anime dolls are creepy, but I find a lot of SDs creepy. It's the more realistic style, yet with things that aren't realistic and exaggerated, like the small mouths yet really fat lips as one example. Or the ones that have the really widely spaced eyes...I don't know who it is that makes those but those especially I think are nightmare-inducing.

Leekeworld A-type? Some seem to be Waardenburg syndrome-inspired. Or are you thinking of something very unrealistic?

I've had comments, but it's been about the eyes. Figures are ok, but dolls not.
They don't like dolls (or whatnot) due to the "realistic" eyes. Even if anime-doll eyes are quite unrealistic, they do look more alive than the ones who have decals/painted-on eyes.

<checking Leekeworld website> While I had something else in mind that I saw on some faceup artist's site recently, yes, those also qualify. Some aren't that extreme, but Rosemary and Ariana give me shivers.

@onion19@

I'm sure they have their fans, and everyone likes different things, but those do scare me.

I can see this. While I don't think I've ever been creeped out by animetic eyes, I've gotten more used to them, or something, over time. I bought scale figures before I had DDs, and I still like the figures, but I've found that after getting used to eyes on dolls, that some figures have too much of a flat or painted-on look for me. I think what it is, and I'm sure there are some exceptions, but it's the figures that don't have a sculpted depression for the eyes and where it truly is just painted/decalled onto a flat surface. I think that's also why I tend to think the Azone 50s with the painted faces don't look that good because they're the same way. I used to not like so much when figures have the eyes be fairly glossy, and I came to typically prefer that lol.

I had a coworker call Ruri "Annabelle" once... Ruri-- one of the handful of "normal looking" girls I have!! Needless to say, I didn't end up showing her the other ones...

My sister and niece think my dolls are creepy, because they've watched too many horror movies.

Several years ago, on my second public photo shoot ever, I had a guy react in an odd way. I wasn't actually at my photo location anymore, I had gone to a game store to pick my husband up where I had left him. Since it was winter and I didn't know how long I'd be in the store, I brought my doll Akira in with me so that her joints didn't get too cold. I didn't have a carrying case at the time, so she was out. A guy in the store that I didn't know came over to look at her and kept repeating how creepy she was, but he kept approaching me and trying to touch her without having asked, so I kept backing up. He continued to follow me, and call her creepy, and try to touch her, so I made my husband wrap it up so we could leave. That's the worst I've ever gotten, and it was really only bad because he was trying to touch without permission. Mostly people leave me alone on photoshoots, or if they're curious they ask questions.

Ok, based on what you are describing, the guy in question clearly had something wrong inside of his head that had nothing to do with the doll. That sort of behavior sets off all kinds of alarm bells to me.

Visiting a game store is an excellent way to encounter completely dysfunctional creeps.  Also, a lot of gamers seem to have personal boundary issues, and don't respect other people's things for some reason.

Yes, that's why I generally didn't like to hang out in the game stores, but my husband liked to play Magic: the Gathering. I'm also socially awkward, so I was unable to interact with other socially awkward people in order to play with him. I sometimes played 2 headed giant in tournaments with him as long as he basically was also playing my deck as well. Otherwise, I only played casually in our house with him or his friends. Even the anime nerds that I meet at conventions aren't as awkward as some of the game store guys.

I remember showing a friend a dollfie I purchased and he said it was really creepy and why I bought that ;0;. Other than that I’ve received compliments. I guess everyone has their own tastes ;v;.

Has anyone had someone obsess over their dolls? When I take my girl out for photos, the majority of people mind their business, you get the odd ones who need to let you know that they think your doll is creepy and then there are the people who hover around in awe. There was this really nice lady in my apartment complex that would always sit back and watch me take photos and kept giving my doll compliments, but it weirded me out to have someone actively watching what I was doing. Like, it was cool that someone liked her so much but also....can you go away please?

I'm kind of known for being a doll lady among my social group. I dunno if it's because they tend to be adults (think thirties and up) or because I'm just so unapologetic about my enthusiasm for them, but it's been very rare to have anybody treat me poorly or call my dolls creepy. I do have one friend, a guy probably five years older than me, who will mock-scream every time I ambush him with a new photo, but it's a joke - even if he does get a little creeped out by them, it's because his children used to play Frankenstein with their toys and he's Seen Some Stuff, Man.

I do think I had one of my smaller purse-sized girls with me (it might have been my Kikipop) when another patron at the bar tried to start some s### about how 'weird' it was to have a doll... I just took whoever it was with me and moved to a new seat where the bartender could have my back if he got rowdy.

i've only ever taken my 1/6 OBITSU-based Mikuru Asahina out and about like once, to my grandma's house,

since she was curious about Sewing/Doll hobby.

that besides, i never take my girls out; they are simply far too precious and hard-won for me to ever be comfortable risking them out in an uncontrolled environment, no matter how careful i may be...

I don't blame you a bit there. The larger ones are a bit too unweildy for anything but 'taking to a doll meet' or staying at home, but I'll take a very small doll out in my purse to cheer me up during the day - almost always Kiki, because she's plastic/vinyl and less likely to be injured.

Yes of course Doll is my secondary hobby so got someone outside the dolls circle say that ahaha XD

and Based on my experience the artificial eyes is what make some people say they are creepy.

When I got my first Dollfie a couple of days ago I took some photos and showed my mother since she is super supportive of my anime figure photography. The first thing she said to me was that my dolls eyes are creepy and weird. I always send my photos her way just to see what she thinks and most of the time she really loves seeing my pictures, but I've sent her a couple now and every time it's "creepy looking" and "weird" lol.

My husband said the same thing before I got my doll, and now he thinks she's pretty so I'm glad he likes her ♡

I've gotten old! and! cranky!, and I just. don't. care. what others think of my dolls anymore. I took a doll-in-progress to a thrift store a couple of months ago--not a DD, but a doll that could easily be seen as creepy--because her shape and size required baby-size clothes, I wasn't sure of the right size, and I always buy that "people" stuff at thrift stores. People obviously looked, but didn't say anything, until I got to the checkout. The clerk looked, did a mild double-take, and said "Is she your fashion consultant?" 😸 I said "No, she's just outgrown all her newborn stuff, and I'm not paying Target prices!" She laughed, I laughed, I got a pile of baby stuff for my doll for under $20. Sunny day all around!

I have noticed, though, that people seem more likely to flat-out say that dolls are "creepy" or "weird" than any other stuff I have or do. Writing fanfiction: "Is it porn? Can I read it?" Hand embroidery: "Oh, how lovely! I just don't have the patience. *sigh*" Sewing everything by hand: "Wow, "lost" skills are so great to have." Cats: "Crazy cat lady! Got pictures? Ooh, such a cutie!" Dolls: "OMG it's staring at me! They're so CREEEEPY!" Always from other adults, never kids--kids think the dolls are cool and ask questions. You know what I do with adults, then, for being rude? I pull the head off, say "Hang on, the eyes are crooked," and push those eyes inward and rattle 'em. "Oh, no, her brain's loose, too. I gotta go fix this, bye!"*

*Yes, I do know, of course, that pediaphobia is real. I can tell the difference between real fear and plain rudeness. I'm not actively mean, honest.

Not so much creepy for me, but I have an aunt who acts like I am still 8 years old. She's not gone soft in the head; she just refuses to acknowledge I am an adult. I'll text her and try to get her to converse with me (it is like this in person as well), but she won't go beyond basic greetings and asking how my hubby and the cats are. And then comes the doll questions. "What is your doll doing today?" I'll usually answer, "Nothing exciting, she doesn't move around too much." One time a few weeks ago she asked, "Aw, are you having tea time with your dollies?"

So no, not creepy just more annoying. Granted, I've only been out in public with my girls a few times but never had any creepy comments. I have a friend that lightly mocks me. She sent me a picture on Facebook awhile back of a guy lying on the sand getting a picture of his vape pen during a sunset. "No matter how pathetic our lives get, at least we will never be reduced to this right? 😄😄 ". I said "Too late, check out my instagram."

It's funny though, the older I get the less I care about that stuff. But it does hurt a little more when it comes from friends/family. My husband is very support and even has gone on a photo trip with me.

I was asking a friend about the 3D printers at school when he asked me what I was interested in doing. I wanted to try printing doll props for my doll, and I showed him a picture. He thought it was the creepiest thing he had ever seen. Though he was very polite and complemented my sewing ability. I'm older so personally I just thought it was funny, and over break I've been sending selfies to him with my doll in the background holding a knife. 🤣 (He knows it's a joke and he's not traumatized, don't worry.)

I haven't been brave enough to take my dolls out in public yet, mostly because I didn't have confidence in my ability to transport one without damage. Now I'm all set, and I think eventually I'll book a tea-time at an American girl doll store for me and my mother. She likes AG and I like smart doll, and I think it would be some good, wholesome fun!
