Doll Transport!

Recommended Posts

froggubi

Wow, my second post already! :3

I want to bring my doll out for photos (and Dolpa eventually, sadly I don't think I'll be able to make it next month), but don't know how best to carry her... Logically I know I should get a Volks carrying case, but there are basically none on Mercari and they're like ¥7500 new which is a lot! I also wanted to get a clear bag to display her in for events, but those are even more expensive at ¥9800, and I worry about sun damage...!

So, TLDR I want your advice on transporting a doll safely, and your experience with carrying bags and cases!

The tote bags are pricey, but honestly they're so worth it. I can fit both Sasara (DDdy) and Izumi (MDD) in one, it's easy to carry around and not too heavy on my shoulder even with the dolls inside, the clear window perfectly displays them, and it has a lil pocket in the back where I can keep their hairbrush and a small camera I sometimes use to take photos with. I decorated mine with lace and keychains and have gotten many compliments on it !

I wouldn't worry about sun damage unless you plan on leaving your dolls outside for weeks lol a couple hours of being outside in a bag won't do anything to them. I have seen people use those clear cat backpacks for dollfies which could be a cheaper option for displaying them while out. I think I've seen an ita style bag on taobao too which looks great, if you feel up to using a proxy service to get it.

The carry case honestly just reminds me of sports bags lol you could easily find one in a similar size to the carry case and use that instead. It wouldn't have the straps to hold them in place but if it's the right size they shouldn't move around too much, or you can get one of the wrapping blankets volks does (or anything similar) to wrap them up in to keep them protected ^^

@Angelpaws Wah! I'm so happy to hear such detailed feedback on the totes! It was the first thing I had my eye on once I ordered my MDD, but I've been so on the fence since they're so expensive and I wasn't able to find reviews about quality! I had thought about getting a non branded clear bag, but I didn't know the official one had a pocket! Normal clear bags don't have that, and that would be such a lifesaver. especially since I want to take her out for photos and events!

I still might look around to see if I can find something cheaper to use, but I also struggle with feeling like my doll deserves the best even if my budget absolutely hates it, so we'll see XD!

It's also such a relief to hear that it's safe to carry them around in a clear display bag! I'm still very new to this and therefore very overly anxious about everything LOL! It took me so so long to get my first BJD so I want to make sure I'm taking the best care of her I can!

(Super cute pics on your signature btw)!!

I prefer to use a camera backpack to carry my dolls around. I can fit up to two kneeling DDs or one kneeling DD and my camera (as well as stands, care items, etc.) without too much trouble. Big advantage is, that it's less bulky and more versatile than a dedicated doll carrying case while still protecting the contents really well. Pick one with a light coloured interior padding and you won't have to wrap the doll up much for transport either (to avoid any potential stains).

Downside is, you'll be hard pressed to find anything proper for below 10000 Yen. - And if you want one that lasts longer than just a couple years, probably even more...

If you're on a budget, I've seen some clear bags at Daiso recently. They're definitely too small for a full size DD, but an MDD might fit sitting down.

I just stick my dolls in a body-length plastic sleeve and pop ‘em in my backpack, but if you want something with a clear display window, the official tote bag or a Yuriqlo bag is the way to go. There’s a ton of options on Taobao too if you can use it.

You can generate your own here, and in fact it would make @Tierparkzone very happy if you did:

@ragnamuffin Oh my goodness!! I will absolutely use that! I won't be able to set up a signature until I've been a member of the website for 14 days though.

@Tierparkzone I was thinking about getting a bag from Daiso! Luckily I only have an MDD so I don't have to worry quite as much about space. Though I also found some cheap ones on Mercari! I'd probably have to have a second bag to carry my actual things in, but that's not too bad. I was thinking specifically looking for a bag that's entirely plastic so I don't have to worry about any fabric dyes getting on my girl, honestly.

And yeah... The bags seem so crazy expensive! Do you have any tips for how to best wrap up/sit dolls in bags like backpacks to keep them safe? I really do wanna go out and take pictures of her but I am absolutely petrified at the idea of her getting broken or something!

... I know logically they're pretty durable, especially with how hard I've pressed on her legs to make sure they stay in place. But I still can't help but worry, since she's my first, y'know?

(Also it's super exciting to see a fellow English speaking doll enthusiast living in Tokyo! I was worried about not being able to find anyone here to socialize with since my Japanese is conversational but far from fluent X3)

@ragnamuffin Gah I forgot to add that I'll have to look into Yuriqlo bags! (So far it seems they sell on Booth? And everything is marked as discontinued. But it's all so cute! Especially their Twitter! I will continue to research >:3)

I've never used Taobao, so I'll have to look into that too! It's super comforting to know that there are so many safe options for carrying her though!

I really thought that if I couldn't afford to get the official bag right now that I wouldn't be able to bring her out of the house, as silly as that sounds!

Added note on my Yuriqlo research!

I have the full size Volks carry case bag, and find it's decent. Seems well built enough for the price, white lined to prevent stains, and fits both my DDS and MDD doll at the same time very easily (could likely fit a third without issue), along with extra accessories, hand parts, hair comb, etc. I'd say it's great if you just want to transport your dolls safely, though obviously not great for displaying them. It's also a bit bulky, they have so much space inside that I find myself not wanting to use it if I'm only transporting one of them.

Honestly, I'm temped by a tote bag too, or a bag that can nicely fit one doll + a camera + a water bottle. I've found I can just barely fit my MDD 2.0 into a 6 litre sling bag along with a camera, but it's a pretty tight fit, and truly tests the body's mobility. I wouldn't recommend that.

@Celluery The white lining sounds especially nice! Staining is definitely one of my biggest anxieties. I also like the little pockets for accessories and such! Seems very practical! I feel like I would mostly use it for long bits of travel for her, like on the train to an event or something, since they're so bulky. Or maybe if I was taking her out for photos but it was going to be a long day, so I could have her safely stowed...? I'm not sure, honestly! I have bad shoulders, so big bags can be a bit tiring.

It seems like I honestly might need to just get several options over time; Like one better for short trips, one for more long transport, and one for display. It's an expensive hobby though, so it'll probably take me quite a while until I actually have all that LOL!

I really love that the official tote bag has a little slot on the back to add a background. I know it's such a small detail, but it's so so cute! ...Do I think it's 9,790円 cute though?

...I'm still undecided X3

The totes are cute, but expensive! It's why I don't have one!

When I've taken the Volks carry case out, it has been to take photos with my dolls. So far, my impression of it is that it's reliable and sturdy enough to where I don't feel concerned for my dolls at all while they're in there. Though I've only had mine for a few months, so I can't say if it'll wear over time significantly or not with heavy use.

It is a one strap shoulder bag though. If you're carrying it out a lot, you'll probably feel it on your shoulder / back! I'd say a backpack would be more comfortable if you needed to carry it a lot, but for shorter walks, or putting them in a car, etc, it's not a problem.

Edit: I'll also add, that when I take them out for photos, I carry my camera in a separate bag. So I end up carrying two bags in this case, which isn't ideal. But likely not an issue if you use your phone or have a compact camera for pictures.

@Celluery

Right? I'm glad I'm not the only one that loves the aesthetic but is scared off by the price tag!

The main bag being sturdy is a huge plus though!

Do you think you could use the strap cross body, with the bag on your back? Or is it only really viable to carry it on one shoulder?

Definitely can use it cross body! It’ll still put more load on the shoulder supporting the strap though, unlike a backpack with two straps. But it’ll definitely help.

If you’re in Japan, you can use it without real name verifying and order direct to save on proxy fees, but if you’re American (or have a US IP, if on base), you might want to stick to AliExpress or use a proxy like Superbuy or something. You’ll have to scan your passport if they restrict your account, but Taobao doesn’t allow Americans to verify so you won’t be able to reinstate your account. If you’re Canadian or another nationality, though, you won’t have this problem.

I use mine to store one Smart Doll, two MDDs and a DDP, so there’s a lot of space 😁

WOAH that's a lot of space! Especially since I think Smart Dolls are taller? That's hugely impressive room then!

As long as the bag keeps the doll mechanically safe, just use the long vinyl tube bag that usually comes with the doll. (Since yours was second hand maybe it didn't come with one of those bags?) It should be sufficient to keep the doll from getting stained or scratched by the bag interior, but it will be a bit fiddly to bag her up and may mess up the wig (maybe transport that separately).

Since the interior of my camera bag is soft and non-staining, I usually don't have to bag up my dolls. I put the doll's arms up so they protect the face then lightly wrap a bit of vinyl bag around arms and head to protect the head and wig a bit better. Put the doll in a kneeling position like an L-shape and, if your backpack is large enough, that should fit nicely. I should have a couple photos of how that looks, so I will try and dig these up in the coming days.

They usually attend all the big doll conventions. If you're based in Tokyo, mark down I-Doll on July 12th. - You might be able to get one of their bags there.

Sure! If you end up going to one of the conventions here, feel free to let me know. I'd be happy to say hi if we meet at one of those.

We also got the Zoom Meetup later tonight, if you feel like probing the waters. - If that's too sudden, check the schedule, we hold them regularly.

As far as I remember my doll didn't come with one of these? ... Or if she did I was too excited to take that down as something memorable and it probably got thrown away... 😅

I know I was on call with my friends when I unboxed her, but I didn't get any photos of the process so I can't be sure. I just remember her being in the box though, no bag.

That's good to know! Have her kneeling, and her arms protecting the head! ... I feel like that sounds easy in my head but I'm probably gonna struggle with it a bit the first time LOL! The first step to being good at something is being bad at something though! Just have to keep trying and learning!

Photos would be super helpful too!

Man! I really want to go (I was also interested in Dolpa), but my family doesn't seem to have any interest in going with me, and there's no easy way for me to travel on my own sadly. (We live pretty far away from the nearest train station and getting there without help would be awful, not to mention I just never feel fully safe going out alone). I'll still try and make it to at least one of them though! If not this one then the next!

:0! That's so sweet of you!

And I'll definitely think about it! I'm not the best at being social (I've spent a lot of time on my own here which has made it hard

haha), but I'd love to eventually give it a shot even if I don't make it to the one tonight!

Most of the doll stuff on AliExpress is resold from Taobao at a markup, so you'll be able to find a lot of the same things without worrying about your account being terminated.

As someone mentioned before, Taobao has some very nice and not as expensive options. It can be navigated pretty okay-ish over proxy sites such as Superbuy for example, which I am using.

Here and here are some pretty cute bags that are fitting for 1/4 dolls. (Let me know if the links directly to Superbuy are working, otherwise I will fetch the Taobao links.)

That is actually a good question, I somehow assumed that they do not ship outside of China at all, haha.

But oh? Both bags are a bit above 27USD, at least when I look at the listings.
